Why it matters
Coco is converting years of supervised street operations into national-chain distribution, but DoorDash controls the order flow and is building competing hardware of its own.

Zach Rash and Brad Squicciarini founded Coco Robotics, which has begun carrying Little Caesars orders from participating restaurants in ロサンゼルス、シカゴ and マイアミ. The rollout gives the sidewalk-delivery operator a national pizza chain as it works to turn years of urban testing into repeatable restaurant infrastructure.
The collaboration announced on August 19 routes eligible DoorDash and Uber Eats orders from the kitchen to a Coco robot waiting at the curb. Little Caesars says downtown San Jose is next. The ordering platforms handle the assignment inside their existing systems, so restaurant workers do not have to copy orders into a separate Coco interface.
That operational detail carries most of the announcement's weight. A delivery robot becomes useful to a restaurant chain when it can enter the existing order flow without adding another tablet, queue or handoff for employees. Little Caesars says Coco reduces congestion inside restaurants and moves orders faster during busy periods, although the announcement provides no delivery-time measurements or restaurant-level operating data.

Rash and Squicciarini started developing Coco while they were students at UCLA. Their first plan was an autonomous golf cart, according to the Daily Bruin's early account of their work. Space constraints pushed them toward smaller machines that could move in and out of a university lab.
The pair launched the operation as Cyan Robotics in April 2020, moving the start forward as the pandemic created immediate demand for contact-light grocery delivery around UCLA. Squicciarini described the longer-term goal at the time as bringing robots into daily life outside research labs and industrial facilities. Pizza delivery from a chain founded in 1959 is a fairly literal realization of that thesis.
Coco's current company biography says Rash and Squicciarini started developing the business as UCLA students. Rash is Coco's co-founder and CEO. Squicciarini, its co-founder and chief technology officer, built Coco's first robotic platforms and oversees autonomy, robotics engineering and core systems.
Coco says it has completed 500,000 deliveries, traveled 1 million miles, produced 1,000 robots and worked with 3,000 merchant partners. Those figures are self-reported and the Little Caesars announcement does not break out how much volume the pizza chain contributes. The rollout is described by city and by "participating" restaurants, which leaves its present scale better measured as a commercial foothold than a chainwide deployment.

The word "autonomous" needs qualification here. Coco markets an autonomous-delivery platform, while its own biography describes the current service as using human-piloted sidewalk robots. In Chicago, WBEZ reported that Coco's machines are always virtually monitored by a person. The Little Caesars service is therefore best understood as human-supervised robotic delivery, rather than a fully driverless fleet operating without remote assistance.
Coco's choice to build around human oversight gave Rash and Squicciarini a way to deploy early, collect street-level operating data and serve paying merchants while autonomy improved. That approach also carries labor and operating costs that fully autonomous systems aim to remove. Coco's economics will depend on how much human attention each delivery requires as the fleet grows.
Rash has been explicit about the commercial test. When Coco announced an $80 million strategic financing on June 11, 2025, he said Coco had built "technology and a business model based on unit economics that work today." The round included Sam and Max Altman, Pelion, Outlander, SNR, Offline, DeepWater and former Uber executive Ryan Graves. Coco said the capital would fund its AI platform, fleet expansion and enterprise partnerships.
Little Caesars is evidence of progress on the enterprise piece. Restaurant chains offer denser order volume than a collection of independent merchants, and pizza is suited to short urban routes where a car and driver can be an expensive way to move one meal. Coco still has to prove that the claimed speed and efficiency gains hold across enough stores and orders to matter to franchise operators.

Coco depends on DoorDash and Uber Eats for access to orders in this rollout. That makes the marketplaces distribution partners and powerful gatekeepers: they decide which delivery method receives an eligible order and control much of the consumer relationship.
DoorDash is also developing its own hardware. In September 2025, DoorDash introduced Dot, a delivery robot designed to travel on roads, bike lanes and sidewalks. DoorDash's orchestration software chooses among human couriers, robots and drones using factors such as speed, cost and location. Coco is integrating with a marketplace that can route volume to outside robotics providers or its own machines.
That tension makes direct restaurant relationships valuable. Little Caesars gives Coco a recognizable merchant partner and a chance to show that its hardware can fit a franchise workflow across several cities. It also gives Little Caesars another delivery option during peak periods without asking franchise employees to operate a separate ordering system.
Expansion brings a public-space test alongside the commercial one. WBEZ reported in March that Chicago residents and accessibility advocates had raised concerns about robots occupying narrow sidewalks and displacing delivery work. The report adds local scrutiny to Coco Robotics' expansion as the company puts more machines into city streets.
Rash and Squicciarini have moved a dorm-room robotics project into the ordering systems of two major delivery marketplaces and the kitchens of a national restaurant chain. The Little Caesars rollout gives Coco more real orders, more street data and a demanding test of its original bet: that small delivery robots can become ordinary city infrastructure before customers or restaurant workers have to think much about the robots at all.
