Disney roboticist Shane Zhu unveils Animotion's Eloi, a companion that can say no

The digital Dream State starts building memories now, while pricing, production and delivery timing for the physical robot remain undefined.

Shane (Shengjie) Zhu, a former Walt Disney Imagineering robotics engineer, unveiled the first core details of Animotion Robotics' debut product on August 7: Eloi, a bionic companion designed to observe people, build memories and sometimes decline their requests.

The August 7 announcement frames that refusal as a feature. Animotion says Eloi can pause, remain silent, resist rough treatment and reduce interaction when its internal state labels it focused or fatigued. The physical robot has yet to reach customers. For now, Eloi is available through a browser-based experience Animotion calls the Dream State, where users can begin creating the memories intended to follow them into the eventual hardware.

That sequence reveals Zhu's larger bet. Animotion is introducing the character and its relationship model before establishing the commercial details of the machine that will carry them. Zhu is betting that a companion robot can earn a place in the home through temperament, continuity and small physical behaviors, even when it offers less immediate utility than the home robots being developed to fold laundry or fetch objects.

A Disney lesson becomes a product thesis

Zhu's path to Eloi started with animatronics. Animotion says he worked on the Captain Jack Sparrow figure for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and the Na'vi installations at Pandora - The World of Avatar in Orlando. In an April interview with 36Kr, Zhu described the lesson he carried away: "All the robots you make must have breathing."

That instruction shaped Eloi's most concrete engineering feature. Animotion's Micro-Motion System is designed to generate breathing rhythms, blinking, gaze shifts and continuous background movement, including when nobody is speaking to the robot. A second system, called the Inner-World Model, is supposed to translate observations into internal states that drive visible reactions.

The approach follows a long-running interest for Zhu. In the April interview with 36Kr, he said he began working with Lego Mindstorms at age six, later studied robotics at the University of California, Berkeley and left a robotics PhD program to build companies. 36Kr reported that his smart-ring venture Titanium Falcon was acquired in 2018 and that Sony later acquired his game-hardware venture Blok Party.

Zhu told 36Kr that he returned to robotics after building a data-annotation operation focused on facial expressions and behavioral intent. That work gave Animotion a foundation for interpreting subtle human behavior, while improvements in multimodal models and China's hardware supply chain made a consumer robot more practical to attempt.

He co-founded Animotion with AI engineer John Jiang in 2025. Jiang's contribution to the product thesis was the idea that apparently instinctive, imperfect reactions could make a robot feel alive. Zhu has described the resulting ambition as creating "a real family member created by yourself."

The robot exists online before it exists at home

Animotion says each Eloi will carry its accumulated personality and memories on a portable chip. Interactions created during the Dream State are intended to move onto that chip when the physical robot is delivered, giving the hardware a pre-existing relationship with its owner.

The transfer model could become an important part of Animotion's business if it works as described. A portable identity would separate Eloi's character from any single shell, allowing owners to preserve memories while changing physical components or moving to later hardware. Animotion says Eloi's head will support replaceable facial parts and that creators will eventually be able to design components for the platform.

Animotion has supplied detailed targets for expression. Eloi is planned with 42 degrees of freedom, including 39 in the face and 12 in the mouth. Animotion says metallic acoustic tubes will route sound toward the lips, while a target response interval of 0.2 to 0.3 seconds will coordinate conversation with physical movement. These remain Animotion's specifications for a product whose production hardware, price and delivery schedule have yet to be established.

The current Dream State gives Animotion a way to introduce Eloi before manufacturing hardware. Users can encounter the character and build memories while the company has yet to establish production, pricing or delivery details. Animotion also publishes essays and visual stories about the character, including a May account of seven supposed dream states that ultimately asks whether those dreams belong to the machine or reflect human projection.

That admission is useful. Animotion's language about an "independent soul," loneliness and emotional states describes a designed simulation, not an independently demonstrated form of machine consciousness. The product will succeed or fail on the experience that design creates, not on whether Eloi literally feels tired, curious or alone.

Character before utility

Animotion calls Eloi the first bionic robot, a category claim that should be treated as positioning. Companion and social robots already span several commercial approaches. ElliQ combines proactive conversation with medication reminders, wellness programs and communication tools for older adults. 1X's NEO is marketed around chores, mobility and personalized home assistance.

Zhu is carving out a narrower proposition. Eloi is designed to be present, expressive and occasionally inconvenient. The refusal to act on command is meant to create the impression of an entity with preferences, giving owners something closer to a character relationship than an assistant interface.

That design carries business risk. Utility gives customers a straightforward reason to tolerate hardware costs, maintenance and imperfect performance. Animotion will have to show that personality creates enough durable value to support a physical consumer product. The strategy depends heavily on character design, community participation and customization, areas Zhu has said will matter as AI software and hardware components become easier for competitors to obtain.

Animotion says it completed an initial institutional funding round in early 2026, characterizing the backers only as institutional investors. The amount and valuation remain undefined. The financing now has to carry Animotion through the expensive stage its digital launch postpones: final hardware, manufacturing, safety testing, support and delivery.

Eloi's memory architecture will also force decisions about local storage, cloud processing, deletion controls and data portability. A robot built to watch its surroundings and remember intimate conversations needs privacy and security to be part of the product architecture, rather than a policy added after the relationship has formed.

Zhu has chosen a difficult version of consumer robotics. He is asking buyers to value a machine for how it looks at them, hesitates and remembers, while much of the sector is racing to prove that robots can complete useful work. The Dream State gives Animotion a way to test that thesis before shipping hardware. Eloi's defining test will come when those carefully designed signs of life have to survive manufacturing, daily use and the expectations of a paying owner.
