ChatGPT lets plugins connect multiple work and personal accounts
OpenAI expanded a Google-only capability to most plugins, letting one conversation query separate accounts under their existing permissions.

Why it matters
Multi-account plugins make ChatGPT more useful as a work hub, but they also put account selection, authorization and retained conversation data under greater scrutiny.
OpenAI has expanded multi-account connections across ChatGPT plugins, allowing users to bring separate work and personal accounts into the same conversation without repeatedly disconnecting and reauthorizing each service.
RuntimeWire previously scooped the feature before its release. OpenAI's release notes date the rollout to September 17th and say it is available on all ChatGPT plans across web, mobile, and desktop. Max Stoiber (@mxstbr) described the released feature in a five-post thread on X on September 18th, saying it works with "most plugins."
The release expands a capability OpenAI introduced for Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts on August 28th. Those integrations allowed a user to search multiple inboxes or check personal and work calendars together. The broader rollout brings the same account structure to other supported services in ChatGPT's Plugin Directory.
How multiple accounts work
Users can open Settings, select Apps or Plugins, choose a supported integration and use the "Connect another account" option. Each account goes through its own provider authorization flow, and users can specify which account ChatGPT should use in a request when the plugin supports account selection.
The feature is narrower than unrestricted access across every account a person uses. OpenAI's account-management documentation says availability depends on the individual app, the user's ChatGPT account and plan, the device being used and any workspace restrictions. Administrators may need to enable a plugin or approve an account domain before employees can connect it.
Existing permissions remain the controlling boundary. Connecting a personal account does not give that account access to documents, messages or records restricted to a separate workplace identity. Provider authorization also does not override restrictions imposed by a ChatGPT workspace administrator.
That distinction matters once a single conversation can reach across several accounts. A prompt asking ChatGPT to search for a contract, meeting or email can now span personal and corporate sources, provided each account has been connected and already holds the necessary permissions. ChatGPT may still request approval before reading information or taking an action, depending on the plugin and workspace controls.
Users can disconnect accounts individually. OpenAI says doing so stops future access through that connection, while other accounts attached to the same plugin can remain active. Disconnecting an account does not automatically remove previous conversations, saved files or memories containing information retrieved while that connection was active.
OpenAI is consolidating ChatGPT around plugins
The update arrives as OpenAI makes plugins the main packaging system for integrations and reusable workflows across ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI migrated its App Directory into the Plugin Directory on July 9th. Under the current structure, a plugin can bundle instructions, connected apps and templates rather than serving only as a link to an external service.
OpenAI also said on September 11th that it plans to retire custom GPTs and provide a migration path to plugins. Multi-account support gives that replacement system a more credible role inside companies where employees routinely maintain several identities across email, calendars, source-code hosts, messaging services and cloud storage.
For plugin developers, the change removes the expectation that one ChatGPT user maps cleanly to one provider account. Stoiber said the support applies automatically to most plugins. Developers still depend on the underlying service's authorization model, while OpenAI handles the interface for adding and selecting supported account connections.
The immediate benefit is less account switching. The larger product move is that ChatGPT can assemble context around a person rather than around a single login. That makes the conversation a shared working layer over multiple services, while leaving the underlying providers and workplace administrators in charge of what each connection can expose.
