Cosmic Robotics joins YC with a 10,000-pound robot already installing solar panels

Cosmic Robotics has joined Y Combinator's Summer 2026 batch with a 10,000-pound autonomous construction robot that the San Francisco company says has installed tens of thousands of solar panels and doubled crew productivity in field deployments.

Co-founders James Emerick and Lewis Jones built Cosmic Robotics around an unusually distant objective: constructing a city on Mars. The immediate business is firmly terrestrial. Cosmic-1 lifts and positions heavy equipment on utility-scale solar farms, and the founders are adapting the same platform for data center construction.

Emerick previously deployed autonomous earthmoving equipment at Built Robotics and developed construction systems at Autodesk Research. He also grew up around construction sites, an experience that shaped Cosmic Robotics' decision to build equipment that works alongside established crews rather than redesigning an entire jobsite around automation.

Jones approached the problem from aerospace. Before Cosmic Robotics, he worked on propulsion at Relativity Space and held roles at SpaceX, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA's Johnson Space Center. Jones has described building a city on Mars as his life ambition. He and Emerick founded Cosmic Robotics in 2024 after concluding that launch capacity was advancing faster than the machines needed to build infrastructure after arrival.

A solar robot becomes a construction platform

Cosmic-1 uses a robotic arm to lift solar panels weighing about 90 pounds and place them onto mounting racks. Cosmic Robotics says the machine can operate in heat, rain, snow and dust while positioning panels within millimeters of their target.

The productivity figures remain company-reported. In its Y Combinator launch, Cosmic Robotics said Cosmic-1 had completed tens of thousands of installation cycles and produced more than twice the labor productivity of manual installation crews.

Earlier field details provide a clearer picture of the workflow. In April 2025, TechCrunch reported that the then-named Cosmic-1A used an eight-wheeled base, cameras, high-accuracy GPS and suction cups mounted on its arm. The robot placed a panel every 30 to 40 seconds, while workers checked the placement and secured the module to the rack.

That configuration makes Cosmic-1 a labor multiplier rather than a fully automated solar installation line. Cosmic Robotics is targeting repetitive lifting and positioning work that consumes crew time and exposes workers to heat and physical strain. People still handle fastening, inspection and exceptions.

The founders are now widening the scope. Cosmic Robotics says it is deploying the platform for data center construction, including tasks involving cooling pipes and cables. The commercial logic is straightforward: many of the contractors building large solar projects also work on power-intensive data centers, giving Cosmic Robotics a route into another capital-heavy market through existing construction relationships.

Cosmic Robotics is also developing Constellation, jobsite planning and mission-control software intended to coordinate machines and, eventually, AI agents. In an August 19th technology roadmap, Emerick and Jones described a four-layer stack spanning electric construction hardware, adaptive robot control, on-device reasoning and software for coordinating construction at city scale.

The Mars plan gives Cosmic Robotics a long research horizon, while solar farms give it revenue opportunities, operating data and failure cases now. The harder test is whether a machine optimized around predictable rows of solar racks can become useful across the less standardized environments found inside data center projects.

NASA funds a separate lunar robot

Cosmic Robotics' space work has already moved beyond a pitch deck. A NASA Small Business Innovation Research award names Jones as principal investigator for Cosmic-XT, a self-powered robot designed to traverse lunar trusses and install wiring, sensors and other equipment.

The six-month Phase I project was designed to advance Cosmic-XT from an estimated technology readiness level of 2 to 4. NASA's abstract describes an inchworm-style machine with truss grippers, an extendable arm and an AI system for detecting problems such as tangled wires and foreign debris. That project is distinct from the wheeled Cosmic-1 platform operating on terrestrial construction sites, though both depend on autonomous manipulation in environments where human labor is scarce or expensive.

A crowded race to automate solar construction

Cosmic Robotics is entering a market where larger competitors are already putting specialized machines to work. Emerick's former employer, Built Robotics, sells autonomous equipment for solar pile driving. Terabase Energy says its Terafab field factory has installed more than 100 megawatts and doubles productivity by automating solar table assembly. AES has also developed Maximo, a robot for panel placement.

Cosmic Robotics is betting that a general-purpose heavy-lift platform can move between jobs rather than remain tied to one construction step. The strategy could spread the cost of the hardware across solar, data centers and other infrastructure projects. It also raises the technical burden: every additional task introduces different tools, materials, safety constraints and work sequences.

Cosmic Robotics previously raised a $4 million pre-seed round led by Giant Ventures, with HCVC, MaC Ventures and angel investors including Azeem Azhar, Aarthi Ramamurthy and Nate Williams participating, according to TechCrunch's April 16th, 2025 report.

Y Combinator gives Emerick and Jones another network for recruiting and customer introductions as they move from early solar deployments toward a broader construction platform. Cosmic Robotics' near-term value will be measured on Earth, where contractors need machines that arrive on schedule, survive weather and keep working through thousands of repetitive cycles. Mars can wait for the uptime data.
