Don Yansen built Kiwi One for seniors left behind by smartwatches

The MIT-trained serial entrepreneur turned caregiving research and two years beside his wife in senior care into a voice-first health band.

Why it matters

Kiwi One tests whether senior wearables can win by removing screens rather than adding features. Yansen's lived caregiving experience gives Kiwi a clear thesis, but clinical accuracy, hardware costs and well-funded rivals will decide whether it becomes infrastructure or another alert device.

Don Yansen founded Kiwi Health in October 2024 after an MIT caregiving study exposed a basic design failure: the people most likely to need a health wearable were often the least able to operate one. By mid-2026, Kiwi was selling Kiwi One, a voice-controlled wristband that lets older adults call, text, set reminders and share health information without working through a touchscreen.

The origin of Kiwi is unusually personal. Yansen had retired to care for his wife and spent two years living alongside her in a senior-care facility. During a study at the MIT AgeLab, he listened as older participants described their difficulty with phones and watches. "Many older adults can't even use a modern cell phone," Yansen told MIT Technology Review in a profile published August 25th.

Yansen graduated from MIT in 1963 with an electrical engineering degree and later earned a master's in physics from Northeastern University. He had already spent years building mobile-health technology. Public reporting identifies him as a co-founder and chief operating officer of ClickDiagnostics, which developed phone-based systems for connecting patients and health workers with remote specialists. Patent records also name Yansen as an inventor on ocular biometric systems developed at Retica Systems and later assigned to Identix and MorphoTrust.

That history makes Kiwi a continuation of Yansen's work on putting complicated health systems behind simpler interfaces. It also explains why a founder several startup cycles into his career would return from retirement for another hardware company, among the least forgiving businesses in technology.

"What I took from MIT was a good education and the feeling I could solve difficult problems," Yansen told MIT Technology Review.

A wearable designed around the person wearing it

Kiwi One is designed to operate without a nearby smartphone. Kiwi says the wristband monitors heart rate, blood oxygen, movement and location, while its software can notify family members or care staff when it detects a fall or an unusual reading. Voice recognition is intended to account for changes in speech that can accompany aging.

The lack of a screen is central to Yansen's bet. Conventional smartwatch makers have steadily packed additional sensors and applications onto the wrist, while preserving interfaces built around taps, menus, notifications and companion phones. Kiwi removes much of that interaction and gives caregivers a web dashboard instead.

Kiwi also recruited Cristiano Novack, a physician and MIT Sloan MBA, as CEO. In Kiwi's fundraising materials, Novack and Yansen describe a two-sided product: a simple device for the wearer and a monitoring system for relatives, nurses and senior-living operators. Kiwi lists consumer pricing at $250 for the hardware and $40 per month, with facility pricing of roughly $20 to $30 per resident each month.

The business model pushes Kiwi beyond the familiar medical-alert button. Selling to senior facilities would give Kiwi recurring subscription revenue and access to larger groups of users, while tying the product to demanding caregiver workflows. Kiwi says it has tested devices in US senior facilities and three hospitals in India. Those deployment claims remain Kiwi's own.

The accuracy claims need a narrower frame

Kiwi's public materials place considerable weight on validation. Its Wefunder page says algorithms were tested across more than 1,000 subjects at three hospitals and achieved 95% accuracy. That figure does not identify a single task, testing protocol, false-positive rate or peer-reviewed study.

The supplied research does not include a peer-reviewed validation study for that figure. Kiwi's claimed accuracy therefore needs a narrower frame: it is a company-reported result, not an independently established measure of clinical performance.

Those limits define the engineering problem. A fall detector becomes difficult to trust if it misses too many slow falls or repeatedly mistakes ordinary movement for an emergency. A blood-pressure estimate can be useful for research or wellness tracking while remaining unsuitable for clinical decisions. The supplied materials do not establish that Kiwi One is FDA-cleared as a medical device.

A small financing round for a hardware-heavy plan

Kiwi is testing investor demand through a Wefunder campaign using a SAFE with a $10 million valuation cap. The page displayed $83,000 from seven prospective investors against a $250,000 target when reviewed. Wefunder's disclosure says the campaign is in a testing-the-waters stage, meaning the displayed figure represents indicated interest rather than a completed priced financing.

Kiwi says the proceeds would support pilots, engineering and production of another 300 to 500 devices. That is a modest capital base for hardware manufacturing, cellular service, customer support and health-data infrastructure. Senior-living deployments also create long sales cycles and require training, integrations and evidence that alerts help staff rather than adding another dashboard to watch.

Yansen is entering a category with established alternatives. UnaliWear's Kanega Watch already combines voice controls, automatic fall detection and cellular access to an emergency monitoring center. Apple Watch can detect hard falls, contact emergency services and notify designated contacts, although its broader interface is exactly the complexity Yansen set out to avoid.

The field grew more crowded on August 25th, when Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman introduced Luffu Link, a screen-free LTE band for health sensing, location sharing and voice updates. The $250 preorder device is expected to ship in early 2027. Luffu arrives with founders who have already built and sold a global wearable platform, while Kiwi arrives with a narrower design brief shaped inside senior care.

Yansen's advantage will depend on whether that proximity produces a device older adults consistently wear and caregivers consistently trust. Kiwi One has reached the market. The harder phase is underway: proving that a simpler interface can support a health-monitoring system whose alerts are accurate enough to matter.
