Exo Labs pauses local.ai name claims after users find prelaunch site
The benchmark site's profiles drew users before Alex Cheema could announce them; a wider launch is set for August 13th.

Exo Labs is pairing independent inference benchmarks with profiles and referrals, giving its open-source developer audience a reason to return even when they are not comparing hardware.

Alex Cheema (@alexocheema) paused name claims on local.ai after users discovered a prelaunch version of the local-AI benchmark site before he could announce it.
Cheema, an Exo Labs co-founder, wrote on X late on August 6th that he had quietly put the site online that morning to test it and observe how early users navigated it. Discovery outran the planned announcement, turning a controlled product test into an unplanned release.
Cheema studied physics at Oxford University and previously built trading infrastructure at Portofino, according to Canonical's founder profile. He started Exo Labs with Mohamed Baioumy, an Oxford-trained AI and robotics researcher. Their core project, exo, connects Macs and workstations into local inference clusters, splits models across the available memory and serves them through standard APIs.
The open-source exo repository had about 46,700 GitHub stars as of August 7th. That audience gives Cheema a ready distribution channel among developers already experimenting with running large models outside centralized cloud services.
A benchmark directory becomes a community product
Exo Labs first presented local.ai in early access on July 2nd. At that stage, the pitch centered on independent data for choosing local models and hardware: which models can run on a given machine, what performance users give up compared with cloud inference and whether owning the hardware can beat paying for API tokens.
The version discovered on August 6th adds a distribution layer to that benchmark product. Users can claim profile addresses under the local.ai domain and compete on a referral leaderboard. The site's navigation also points to separate sections for hardware, models, energy use and a community wall.
That structure turns a technical comparison site into an identity directory for the local-inference community. Exo Labs can use profiles and referral links to recruit users before local.ai has to win search traffic for individual model and hardware pages.
The initial rush forced Exo Labs to stop accepting additional claims. The referral page says existing profiles, access and standings remain active, while new referrals cannot be completed during the pause. The site lists the broader launch for August 13th at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
The provisional leaderboard was led on August 7th by a user named Mia with 436 qualified referrals. The next listed account had 56. Local.ai defines a qualified referral as someone who uses a referral code and completes a name claim; page visits and admissions through early-access codes do not count.
Hardware prizes raise the stakes
Local.ai plans to award a DGX Spark and a Mac mini M4 Pro with 64GB of memory to the participant with the most qualified referrals at launch. The site credits Nvidia with providing the DGX Spark. Local.ai says final eligibility, regional limits, verification procedures and tie-break rules will be set in the official rules before the promotion opens.
The prize pairing matches Exo Labs' product thesis. DGX Spark represents a purpose-built personal AI system, while the Mac mini represents the consumer hardware that Exo Labs wants developers to pool into inference clusters. Both routes challenge the assumption that serious model serving must begin with rented data-center GPUs.
Local.ai is scheduled to reopen that argument with live benchmark data on August 13th. The accidental discovery gave Cheema an early test of a different question: whether Exo Labs can convert interest in local models into a durable user network. The lopsided referral standings show that the profile system can spread quickly, while the pause shows how much launch infrastructure Exo Labs still has to put around it.
