Why it matters
fal has spent September proving it can tune and serve video models. Lucent adds the layer that chooses those models and turns their outputs into branded work, moving fal closer to creative budgets.

fal announced Monday that it acquired Lucent, bringing co-founders Dimi Panagiotopoulos (@dimi_is_on_x) and Alex Koumpas (@alexkoumpas) into the generative-media platform. The acquisition price and the founders' new titles were not disclosed.
Panagiotopoulos and Koumpas arrived at creative software through very different technical careers. Panagiotopoulos studied engineering at Imperial College London, where his public profile lists first-class honors and a machine-learning thesis on defect detection in metal manufacturing. fal says he shipped energy-optimization algorithms that ran on eight Formula 1 cars by age 21, while producing online videos that reached millions of views.
Koumpas moved from electronic trading into applied AI. His personal site lists earlier roles at Credit Suisse, J.P. Morgan, Blockchain.com and Eisler Capital, where he worked on high-frequency trading and machine-learning systems. He previously co-founded Crypton, a low-latency trading platform that was acquired, and Orderit AI, which applied automation to wholesale order processing.
The two founders built Lucent Chat around a frustration familiar to anyone producing AI media: every model came with another interface, subscription and prompting convention. Lucent let a user describe an image, video or audio project in ordinary language, then selected models and managed prompts, edits and brand instructions behind the chat interface.
"We originally built this for ourselves," Koumpas wrote shortly after Lucent's November 2025 launch, describing a creative process that required switching among more than 10 tools. In a separate launch-period post, Panagiotopoulos said Lucent was adding more than 500 users a day 10 days after launch.
A fast product becomes a talent deal
fal says Lucent reached more than 16,000 active creators in its first three weeks, with those users generating more than 75,000 assets. Lucent passed 30,000 registered users shortly afterward, according to fal's acquisition announcement. Those figures describe Lucent's launch period rather than its current audience, and fal did not provide revenue, retention or paying-customer figures.
The speed still explains the deal. Panagiotopoulos and Koumpas took a fragmented collection of generative-media models and gave creators one conversational layer for using them. At launch, Koumpas said Lucent supported more than 20 models and handled prompt rewriting, generation and revisions behind the scenes.
fal CEO and co-founder Burkay Gur framed the acquisition around the founders' ability to pair engineering with product judgment. Gur said fal looks for builders who are "technical enough to build anything" and commercially aware enough to decide what deserves to be built.
Gur and Gorkem Yurtseven founded fal in 2021 after working at Coinbase and Amazon, respectively. The pair began with infrastructure: APIs and GPU systems capable of serving image, video and audio models at production scale. Gur told TechCrunch in 2024 that fal emerged from pandemic-era side projects and a belief that generative models would change how media was produced and consumed.
Lucent extends that original bet. fal already gives developers access to more than 1,000 models through a common serving layer and says it operates more than 1,300 production endpoints. Panagiotopoulos and Koumpas were working on the next problem up the stack: deciding which model should handle a task, preserving context across generations and turning raw outputs into usable advertising assets.
fal moves closer to finished creative work
The acquisition follows a run of launches that pushed fal beyond third-party model hosting. RuntimeWire reported in early September that fal post-trained H3 Max to generate five-second videos in roughly three seconds, then released a live version that developers can steer through a WebRTC session. fal later added reference-to-video generation using images, video and audio inputs.
Those releases strengthened fal's model and inference layers. Lucent brings in founders who were building the interface between those systems and the people commissioning the work. fal's stated thesis is that generation quality will converge, leaving model selection, orchestration and creative judgment as more durable sources of value.
The market has already been moving in that direction. Runway introduced a conversational interface for image and video generation in May 2025 and later added node-based workflows that chain models and intermediate steps. Adobe Firefly Creative Production offers enterprise workflows for bulk editing, partner models and repeatable production tasks. Creative AI is becoming a workflow business as model access gets easier to buy from multiple providers.
fal has the capital to pursue that shift. fal announced a $49 million Series B in February 2025 led by Notable Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, with Bessemer Venture Partners, Kindred Ventures and First Round participating. A December 2025 Series D added $140 million from investors including Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins and NVIDIA, bringing fal's publicly announced funding to at least $212 million at that point.
The acquisition announcement centers on Panagiotopoulos and Koumpas rather than a detailed Lucent integration plan. fal has not specified whether Lucent Chat will remain available under its existing brand or how Lucent's advertising workflows will appear inside fal's developer platform. That makes the founders the clearest acquired asset today.
For Panagiotopoulos and Koumpas, fal offers distribution, compute and a catalog of models that Lucent previously had to coordinate from the outside. For fal, the founders bring direct experience translating model choice into a product that creators adopted quickly. The combined bet is that the winning generative-media platform will need to understand the brief as well as it understands the GPU.
