Flora Coatings sells $800,000 offering to one undisclosed investor
Founder and polymer scientist Atul Tiwari is turning NSF-backed research into coating products for aerospace, marine and automotive applications.

Atul Tiwari, the polymer-materials scientist who founded and leads Flora Coatings, has raised $800,000 from a single investor as he works to turn years of government-backed coating research into an industrial materials business.
The Phoenix-based manufacturer reported the equity sale in a Form D filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 7. The first sale occurred on July 9, and the full $800,000 offering has been sold, according to the underlying filing.
The filing reports one investor and no sales commissions or finder fees. Flora sold the entire offering to that investor, but the filing does not identify the buyer.
Flora says it began in 2016 and grew from National Science Foundation-backed research into commercial surface-treatment products. Tiwari previously worked as a mechanical-engineering research faculty member at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Flora credits him with a doctorate in polymer materials science, 19 books, more than 70 research articles and multiple patented technologies.
Flora president Anupama Chaturvedi, a mechanical engineer and trained chemist, has worked alongside Tiwari on the underlying science. The pair are named as inventors on a patent covering an ambient-curing, sprayable quasi-ceramic coating. Flora says Chaturvedi has received two patents and focuses on product development.
One investor, one $800,000 check
The Form D provides a clear picture of the transaction's structure. Flora sold equity through an exempt private offering. One investor bought the entire round in a transaction with no broker or finder.
The filing does not identify that investor, Flora's valuation, the price of the securities or the ownership stake transferred. The single-check structure points to a negotiated investment rather than a broad angel syndicate, though the counterparty could be a fund, strategic investor or individual.
That distinction matters for Tiwari. Industrial materials companies often depend on strategic customers and manufacturing partners as much as conventional venture funds. A buyer with access to aerospace, automotive or marine supply chains could offer more than capital, but the filing does not establish whether Flora's investor has an operating relationship with Flora.
The transaction is larger than Flora's earlier reported funding tranches. Flora has received a mixture of founder capital, angel investment, accelerator backing and federal research awards. Public databases disagree on how much Flora had raised before this offering, so the $800,000 should not be added to any single cumulative funding figure without qualification.
From laboratory research to industrial qualification
Flora's early development was supported by the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation Research program. Flora's funding history describes Phase I, Phase II and Phase IIb support for developing, testing and commercializing its coating technology.
Flora later joined the 2022 STANLEY+Techstars accelerator, which selected startups working on advanced materials, electrification, automation and circular manufacturing. Stanley Black & Decker described Flora's core technology as a transparent, one-part liquid that forms a functional glass-like surface under ambient conditions.
The one-part formulation is central to Tiwari's pitch. Conventional industrial coatings can require multiple components, carefully measured mixtures and controlled curing conditions. Flora says its products arrive as ready-to-use liquids that can be sprayed, brushed, rolled or wiped onto a surface.
Flora's portfolio includes FLYCO, an anti-corrosion pretreatment and primer; AVIRAL, an oleophobic coating intended to reduce ice and contaminant adhesion; and INVESIL, an antimicrobial surface treatment. Flora also sells polymer resins and materials for marine, architectural and automotive applications.
Those performance descriptions come from Flora. Its product pages cite military, aerospace and industry testing standards, but the current filing contains no performance data, customer contracts or revenue figures.
Tiwari has spent years chasing the commercialization gap
A March 19, 2022 update published under Tiwari's name captured the practical constraints behind the research. Flora was seeking strategic investors, product trials, manufacturing capacity and the certifications required to qualify coatings for aviation and defense uses.
Tiwari wrote that Flora would eventually need an in-house blending facility to "keep the secret sauce within the company." Flora also said at the time that its products had been purchased by more than 50 customers and that it was discussing trials with three Fortune 500 companies. Those were self-reported, trial-stage indicators from 2022 rather than evidence of scaled commercial deployment.
In that March 2022 update, Flora said it still needed ISO 9001 certification before applying for a qualified product listing. No reputable current source confirms that the company has since completed either milestone. Flora was also coordinating manufacturing, packaging and demonstrations with outside organizations at the time. Each additional industrial market brings its own testing, procurement and qualification cycle.
Flora's corporate timeline reflects that long path. Flora says its Phoenix operation began in 2016, with NSF-backed development and military testing following in later years. The new SEC filing lists the current Delaware corporation as organized in 2022, indicating that Flora's operating and research history predates its present legal entity.
The next proof point is repeatable deployment
The $800,000 round gives Tiwari fresh private capital after a decade spent building patents, product formulations and institutional relationships. Flora has reached the stage where the most valuable evidence will come from qualified products, repeat orders and sustained use in demanding environments.
The financing itself is verified. Flora sold the full offering to one investor, and no intermediary took a fee. The investor's identity and the economics of the deal remain private, leaving the market without a valuation or ownership benchmark.
Tiwari's wager is that safer, single-component coatings can win business in industries where corrosion, contamination and maintenance carry high costs. The science has attracted federal support and accelerator attention. The $800,000 investor is now betting that Flora can convert that technical history into a repeatable industrial operation.
