Google launches Pixel 11 Pro Fold with gearless hinge and $1,899 price

Why it matters

Google is asking foldable buyers to pay $1,899 for a redesigned hinge and a three-times-durability claim that lacks independent validation; Pixel Care+ adds $19 a month or $319 for two years, with separate service fees for accidental damage.

Google announced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold on August 12 in a launch post authored by Justin Savich, a Google group product manager. The book-style phone adds a gearless hinge, a lighter and thinner body, and software that assigns different jobs to its inner and outer displays. The foldable starts at $1,899. Preorders opened August 12 on the Google Store, and the phone is scheduled to reach stores on August 20.

The hardware changes center on durability and portability. Google says the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is almost 10% lighter and about 1 millimeter thinner than the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The phone also uses its two displays for split-screen work, exterior-screen translation and notifications from the HiLight system.

Durability is the central sales argument

Google claims the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is three times more durable than last year's model, based on its own testing; the supplied materials contain no independent validation. The construction changes include a glass-fiber-composite rear cover, ceramic cover glass for the exterior display, IP68 dust and water protection, and a gearless hinge designed to protect the flexible inner screen.

Google has reason to put durability at the front of the launch. A 2023 bend test of the original Pixel Fold damaged the phone near an antenna when it was forced backward, disabling part of the inner display. The test was harsher than ordinary use. (Tom's Guide)

Two screens divide the software workload

The large inner display supports split-screen apps, drag-and-drop, app bubbles and Instant View. Those features are designed for tasks such as moving information between apps or keeping one app visible beside another.

HiLight, a ring of LEDs around the camera flash, can glow in assigned colors when selected contacts call or while the owner is speaking to Gemini hands-free. Google plans to add message notifications for favorite contacts later. The system can provide information while the phone is face down, reducing the need to open the device or wake a screen.

Google says its Tensor G6 chip and 16GB of RAM power those features. Both displays reach a claimed peak brightness of 3,600 nits, 20% above the previous foldable. The camera system includes a 48-megapixel main sensor and a telephoto camera with up to 30x Super Zoom.

Premium pricing raises the durability stakes

Google announced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold five days after Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 became generally available on August 7, according to Samsung's launch material. Google's pitch rests on the revised hinge and materials, Pixel camera processing, HiLight, Gemini and software built around the two displays.

The launch comes as phone makers pursue higher-value devices while replacement cycles lengthen. IDC projects 30% year-over-year shipment growth in 2026 and says foldables could exceed 10% of smartphone market value by 2029.

At $1,899, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold sits at the premium end of Google's Pixel lineup. The Associated Press reported that Google raised the starting price of each Pixel 11 model by $100 from the prior generation.

The gearless hinge, revised materials and division of tasks between the two displays now carry the product case. At launch, Google's own testing is the only evidence supplied for the three-times-durability figure. Buyers must weigh that claim against the $1,899 starting price.
