Hero Esports launches robot fight league in Riyadh and pitches an eight-city season

Hero Esports is betting that humanoid robotics can become a recurring media property. Its advantage lies in event production and Saudi backing, while the technology comes from existing robot makers.

Hero Esports co-founder and CEO Danny Tang launched the CyberHero robot-sports program in Riyadh on September 9th, putting ten full-size humanoid robots into a combat arena and laying out plans for an eight-city international season.

Tang is approaching robot competition with the background of a financier and esports operator, rather than a roboticist. Before co-founding Hero Esports in Shanghai in 2016, she worked at KKR and China Development Bank Capital. She spent eight years as Hero Esports' chief financial officer before taking over as CEO in 2024, when founder Dino Ying moved into the executive chairman role.

That experience explains the shape of CyberHero. Hero Esports is packaging existing humanoid hardware as a tournament, media property and sponsorship vehicle, using the production model it developed around competitive video games. CyberHero is not presented as a standalone robotics manufacturer or autonomous AI developer.

The September 9th announcement said the inaugural season would cover eight cities across the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and Asia, including two Middle Eastern stops. Hero Esports is seeking host cities, venues, robotics suppliers, universities and commercial partners, making the proposed circuit as much a partner-recruitment campaign as a settled competition calendar.

Human operators, full-size robots

CyberHero's Riyadh event used EngineAI's T800, a humanoid measuring about 1.73 meters and weighing 75-85 kilograms. Each robot has 29 articulated joints and can walk, run, punch, kick, turn and recover after falling.

The machines were operated by human teams. CyberHero says future matches may combine teleoperation, programmed behavior and autonomous decision-making, depending on the configuration. That distinction matters: the opening event tested robot hardware, control systems and operator skill, rather than staging an unsupervised contest between autonomous fighters.

The published format resembles a video game translated into a physical arena. Two sides field three robots apiece in one-on-one rounds, with a best-of-seven structure. Each robot starts with 30 hit points, loses points according to the location of a strike and is replaced after reaching zero. A round ends after three minutes or a knockout, and ties proceed to sudden death.

Hero Esports divides participants into builders, coders and drivers. Builders handle robot engineering, coders develop and train the software, and drivers make decisions during a match. The structure gives universities and robotics developers a reason to enter while preserving a visible role for competitors who can perform for an audience.

The Riyadh debut was an invite-only event at MBC Studio 1 in Boulevard City and was not livestreamed. Creators AboFlah and Bashar Arabi managed the opposing sides, while Tokyo Machine performed a DJ set. The production combined combat, lighting, music and gaming personalities, showing where Hero Esports expects the initial audience to come from.

The first claim does not survive inspection

Hero Esports describes CyberHero as the world's first global humanoid robot sports league. The narrower word "global" carries much of that claim.

EngineAI had already opened its URKL humanoid fighting league in Shenzhen on July 16th, nearly two months before CyberHero's Riyadh debut. That competition also used T800 robots and attracted registrations from more than 200 teams, according to an account published by Shenzhen's Nanshan district government. Thirty-two teams advanced into a tournament built around software tuning and system optimization on standardized hardware.

Ultimate Bots also operates humanoid competitions using Unitree G1 robots and is advertising a second season in the US with a $100,000 prize pool. Earlier robot-fighting projects and research competitions established the category well before 2026.

CyberHero's differentiation is distribution. Hero Esports wants to take one format through multiple cities, attach creators and live entertainment, and recruit host governments, sponsors, universities and hardware suppliers. The technical novelty is limited; the commercial ambition is larger.

Saudi capital meets a Saudi launch

Riyadh is a logical first stop for Hero Esports. Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group invested $265 million in Hero Esports, then known as VSPO, in 2023. Savvy, which is owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, received a significant minority stake.

Hero Esports has since deepened its role in Saudi gaming, including work around the Esports World Cup. CyberHero now gives Hero Esports another property suited to the kingdom's spending on gaming, tourism and live entertainment. The debut also featured Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, chairman of the Saudi Esports Federation.

Hero Esports says it organizes more than 7,000 esports competitions annually and reaches hundreds of millions of fans. Those figures are company-supplied, but the existing production operation gives CyberHero an infrastructure advantage over robotics developers attempting to build sports properties from scratch.

Tang said Hero Esports is establishing a global technology lab at its Shanghai headquarters and intends to use competition to generate data that can improve robot performance. The league may eventually add disciplines as humanoid capabilities advance.

That research framing still depends on what CyberHero permits teams to change, what match data Hero Esports and its hardware partners retain, and how much autonomy enters the competition. Standardized robots with constrained software access would produce a controlled entertainment product. A format that lets engineers modify perception, control and decision systems could become a useful testing ground for physical AI.

For now, CyberHero is an event format looking for a season. Hero Esports has demonstrated the show, identified four regions and opened the door to partners. Turning an invite-only Riyadh spectacle into a repeatable eight-city property will require audiences willing to watch humanoids fight after the novelty of the first kick wears off.
