Bluecore Energy raises $50M to move floating reactors toward licensing
Silverton led the seed seven weeks after launch, funding engineering, regulatory work, fuel procurement and Bluecore's Long Beach prototype.

Kofi Asante's Bluecore Energy announced a $50 million seed round led by Silverton Partners on Tuesday, TechCrunch reported, seven weeks after the Long Beach nuclear developer emerged from stealth with a $10 million pre-seed.
Bluecore says the seed was oversubscribed. The financing brings its publicly reported funding to $60 million. Bluecore plans to spend the money on engineering, regulatory work, hiring, nuclear fuel and the supply chain required to turn a steel test vessel into a licensable maritime power system.
Asante has spent his career launching systems that move goods across land, air and water. After graduating from Tufts University in 2017, he joined Uber, worked in its Advanced Technologies Group and Uber Freight, and helped launch Powerloop, a trailer-pooling service for trucking carriers. He later led strategy and business development at autonomous cargo aircraft developer Elroy Air and worked on an electric tugboat program at the Port of Long Beach.
Bluecore is his attempt to apply that launch playbook to nuclear infrastructure. Bluecore is designing 10-megawatt-electric, water-cooled reactors mounted on barges, with subsea cables carrying power ashore to ports, coastal facilities, communities and data centers. Multiple units could be moored together as demand grows.
Investor demand pulled the round forward
Slauson & Co., which led the pre-seed, returned for the seed alongside Harlem Capital, Precursor Ventures, LMNT Ventures, Visible Hands VC, Karman Ventures, Capital Factory, Share VC, Markham Valley Ventures and Hartbeat Ventures. New investors included MaC Venture Capital, Collab Capital, Symphony Ventures, Act One Ventures, Animal Capital, Black Angel Group and Rackhouse Ventures.
The pace says as much about the market as it does about Bluecore. Nuclear developers need substantial capital long before commercial revenue is possible, and investors are competing to finance designs aimed at the power constraints facing ports, industrial sites and AI data centers. Bluecore has secured $60 million before documenting a fueled demonstration or commercial deployment.
Commercial demand remains at the inbound-interest stage in Asante's public account. He told TechCrunch that Bluecore has heard from ports, data centers and communities seeking power and water. He separately told Axios that Long Beach remains Bluecore's priority.
When RuntimeWire examined Bluecore's first $10 million round, the immediate project was an empty reactor-module prototype at Berth D48. The seed gives Bluecore the resources to begin tackling the steps that determine whether it can progress beyond that controlled test.
The money meets a licensing bottleneck
A California environmental filing describes Bluecore's Long Beach project as a non-hazardous, unfueled reactor-module prototype. Bluecore has secured a barge and begun work on the prototype, but no supplied source documents a fueled reactor, commercial power generation or a commercial customer.
The filing says the empty steel vessel is designed to accommodate sensors and controls and may be placed on a moored barge to collect data during barge movement. It also says nuclear fuel would not be used onsite and describes nuclear-specific testing as taking place at Idaho National Laboratory.
That distinction matters. Bluecore has hardware, waterfront space and at least one barge. Bluecore does not yet operate a nuclear power plant at the port. The current equipment is intended to test monitoring, controls and behavior on the water rather than generate power.
Bluecore had begun formal engagement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Coast Guard by July, according to SiliconANGLE. The agencies already have their own memorandum governing cooperation on civilian floating nuclear plants and propulsion systems. The NRC says maritime reactors can be licensed under existing federal frameworks, while its staff is still preparing guidance on the issues unique to floating deployments.
The seed could allow Bluecore to begin ordering nuclear fuel, Axios reported, while the public filing says nuclear-specific component testing would occur at Idaho National Laboratory. Fuel procurement would move Bluecore toward meaningful reactor testing. It would also introduce a more demanding supply chain, with nuclear-grade components, documentation and quality controls layered onto the difficulties of maritime hardware.
Bluecore has recruited specialists from industries accustomed to long qualification cycles and safety-critical equipment.
Asante built a launch team for the hard part
According to Bluecore's team page, its engineering roster includes nuclear core design lead Kwadwo Adutwum and licensing and safety lead Megan Moyette, whom Bluecore describes as a 13-year U.S. Navy nuclear submarine officer. Bluecore says controls lead Andrew Phillips spent eight years at SpaceX working across Falcon, Dragon and Starship. Bluecore says quality and supply chain lead William Zimmer spent 10 years in production and quality at Toyota and later worked in aerospace manufacturing at Northrop Grumman.
The backgrounds fit Asante's central bet: Bluecore can adapt established water-cooled reactor principles to a smaller commercial platform while borrowing manufacturing and launch discipline from aerospace, automotive and maritime programs. Bluecore says its design uses passive safety systems and five protective barriers, including steel containment, a reactor vessel and a surrounding water shield.
Bluecore still has to prove that those pieces form a system regulators will approve and customers will finance. Maritime nuclear projects divide oversight across nuclear, marine, environmental and port authorities. The NRC and Coast Guard agreement clarifies coordination between two of those bodies, but it does not confer approval on Bluecore's design.
Competition is also moving toward ports. London-based Core Power signed an August agreement with the Port of Corpus Christi for a site-specific maritime nuclear readiness study. That work covers potential sites, grid connections, customers, security, licensing, mooring and long-term operations - the same institutional questions Bluecore must answer in Long Beach.
Asante has moved quickly enough to secure capital, a port foothold and a specialized team during Bluecore's first year. The $50 million seed lets Bluecore start ordering the expensive parts and regulatory work that a nuclear developer cannot improvise later. From here, Bluecore's pace will be measured in validated hardware, completed reviews and fuel tests rather than fundraising weeks.
