Lumeria takes $199 preorders for a phone-mounted AI skin scanner

Maryanne Alhallak and Anthea Guo are taking $199 preorders for Lumeria, a Y Combinator Summer 2026 startup building a phone-mounted camera that records changes in a user's skin and feeds the images into an AI recommendation service.

The founders arrived at the same problem from different directions. Guo, a 2026 UC Berkeley electrical engineering and computer sciences graduate with a bioengineering minor, developed severe eczema while in college. She has said it took five months, four misdiagnoses and several prescriptions before she received a useful answer. Her younger sister also spent years living with eczema before the family connected the condition to dust mites in their carpet.

Alhallak, a 2026 Berkeley economics graduate, approached skin tracking after shadowing a dermatologist. She saw clinicians trying to reconstruct flare-ups from a single appointment, without a consistent visual history of how a patient's skin had changed between visits. In a July 1st profile of the founders, Alhallak described longitudinal data as one of skincare's central gaps.

Their answer is the Lumoscope, a compact attachment that clips to a smartphone and captures skin under visible, ultraviolet and polarized light. Lumeria says those channels can track optical signals associated with redness, pigmentation, sebum, texture, pores and surface gloss under more consistent conditions than an ordinary phone photo.

The hardware is the data strategy

Lumeria is selling the attachment as a way to build a personal skin history rather than produce a one-time score. A user scans an area for about a minute, then answers questions about products, sleep, travel and weather. Lumeria's Lumi software compares the reading with earlier scans and recommends a change before the next check-in.

The pitch gives Lumeria a more defensible input than another AI skincare questionnaire. Standardized lighting and positioning could make scans taken weeks apart easier to compare, while the attachment creates proprietary image data for Lumeria's models. Lumeria says its models are trained in-house using consented, dermatologist-labeled images supplied through clinical partnerships rather than sending scans to a general-purpose vision model.

Lumeria also says Lumi can search a database covering more than 18,000 products and ingredients, linking changes in a user's readings to products and habits recorded alongside each scan. Those cause-and-effect recommendations will require disciplined use: skincare routines, environmental changes and adherence can all shift during the weeks it takes to observe a trend.

The founders say they conducted more than 150 interviews with patients and dermatologists while developing Lumoscope. Lumeria's Y Combinator launch material also says it has two clinical partnerships and a pending patent. Those are Lumeria's claims; the immediate commercial test is whether the hardware ships on schedule and produces readings that customers find consistent enough to keep scanning.

A wellness device using clinical tools

Lumeria uses imaging methods associated with dermatology, but it classifies Lumoscope as a general-wellness product. Its website states that the device cannot diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease and directs users to a qualified professional for medical concerns.

That distinction matters because Lumeria's marketing says Lumoscope can surface patterns tied to a breakout before it becomes visible and help users monitor worsening skin between appointments. Lumeria is selling trend detection and product guidance, not a replacement for a dermatologist. The usefulness of its AI will depend on whether users understand that boundary when an app assigns scores and interprets images of inflamed or changing skin.

Preorders are currently limited to US addresses and are charged at checkout. Lumeria's preorder terms say devices are expected to ship in September and October 2026, with full refunds available before shipment and a 30-day return period after delivery.

The $199 launch price is scheduled to end on August 31st, after which Lumeria lists the hardware at $329. Every device includes a free software tier with scans and direct skin metrics. A Premium plan adds longer-term trends, personalized recommendations and the Lumi coach for $10 a month or $100 a year after a three-month trial.

That subscription is central to the business Lumeria is trying to build. Lumoscope gets a sensor into the bathroom; recurring scans create the history needed to improve recommendations and justify an ongoing software fee. The risk is equally clear. A device built around longitudinal data loses much of its value if customers stop using it after the novelty of the first few scans wears off.
