Mara raises $7M to make counter-drone defense as expendable as the threat

Daniel Kofman and Sriram Raghu raised $7 million for Mara, their San Francisco defense hardware business, to move its Spike counter-drone system from field tests toward customer deployments. The founders are building Spike around a blunt economic premise: a drone that costs a few hundred dollars should be met with defenses designed to be lost and replaced, rather than another scarce, expensive aircraft.
The August 26th announcement said Khosla Ventures led the round, with participation from a16z Speedrun, Night Capital, Palmdrive, Protagonist, Freedom Fund and Indicator Fund, alongside unnamed angel investors. Mara has not attached revenue, order volume, or production figures to the financing.
Kofman and Raghu met in high school in 2013 and started building together before either had finished college. At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Kofman worked on rifle-grade body armor and OmniPilot, a controller intended to make drones easier for first responders to fly. A university profile from 2017 identified Raghu, then a computer engineering senior, as Kofman's co-founder at Kofman Technologies and described their work with two Department of Homeland Security programs.
The founders later helped build Optivolt, a solar hardware business. Mara says Optivolt shipped smart solar panels to Anduril, the U.S. Air Force, and Ukraine. Raghu also developed software that connected Linux vulnerabilities reported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to the affected code across kernel branches, according to his a16z Speedrun profile.
An economics-first counter-drone system
Spike has two modular components. Spotter combines optical and acoustic sensors with optional radar and Mara's detection software. Seeker is a 250-gram, tube-launched kinetic interceptor traveling at a stated 200 kilometers per hour. Spotter can detect and track an incoming drone, then cue Seeker to launch and close on the target.
Mara says a Spike installation can carry as many as 48 interceptors and can be installed on the ground, a vehicle, or a vessel in 30 minutes or less. The founders envision a smaller configuration carried by two operators.
Kofman described the underlying design choice in the funding announcement: "Small drones changed the battlefield because they distributed the cost and capability of precise attack." Spike applies the same logic to defense, spreading sensors and launchers across small nodes instead of concentrating protection in one high-cost interceptor or gun position.
Some public specifications remain in motion as the prototype changes. The Naval Postgraduate School's JIFX 25-4 Quad Charts characterized Mara's technology at readiness level 4 and described a planned experiment to validate detection, tracking, and interception performance. That characterization indicates technology validation rather than independently established combat deployment.
Mara's funding announcement says a human remains "on the loop" to set engagement rules and safely abort launches. The company does not publicly explain how human control applies across every operating mode. That distinction will shape how military customers evaluate Spike because the system is designed to detect, pass launch orders, and execute kinetic engagements at machine speed.
Field evidence, with the results reported by Mara
Mara says Seeker completed intercepts after receiving targeting data through U.S. Army software during an exercise in Texas. In a separate Army exercise in Europe, Spotter reportedly operated on an armored vehicle and sent detections into Army command software. Mara also claims an end-to-end demonstration with a U.S. special operations unit in which Spotter detected a target and cued a Seeker launch without operator input.
In July 2026, Ukrainian forces operated Spotter about 40 kilometers from the front line and tracked multiple first-person-view drones, according to Mara. The announcement did not identify the unit or publish detection and intercept data from that deployment. The Naval Postgraduate School document independently establishes that Mara entered a U.S. government experimentation process, though it does not verify the later performance claims from Texas, Europe, or Ukraine.
Mara also says Spike is being used in a civilian pilot at a South Korean commercial port. The deployment fits a broader market opening for counter-drone systems around infrastructure, where operators need to stop small aircraft without scattering bullets, missiles, or disabled drones across crowded areas.
A crowded market, and a narrower bet
Mara is arriving among counter-drone developers pursuing different answers to the same cost problem. Allen Control Systems is building Bullfrog, a passive-sensing autonomous gun platform. Fortem Technologies says its DroneHunter F700 uses onboard radar and NetGuns to capture drones. Epirus uses high-power microwaves to defeat individual aircraft and swarms without consuming an interceptor for every target. Anduril offers a broader counter-UAS stack that includes autonomous interceptors and command software.
Mara's narrower wager is a deep magazine of tiny kinetic interceptors connected to passive and optional radar sensing. The design gives up the appeal of recovering an expensive interceptor. Mara instead wants the replacement economics to resemble the drones it is hunting.
That strategy explains why a $7 million round can matter despite being modest for defense hardware. Mara's a16z Speedrun profile lists seven employees. The financing can support engineering, testing, initial manufacturing, and the procurement work needed to turn promising demonstrations into repeatable deployments. Mara says it is targeting ground-mounted installations by the end of 2026, followed by vehicle-mounted and man-portable versions as production scales in 2027.
The next test sits on the factory floor and in procurement offices. Mara has to show that Spike's sensors can maintain reliable tracks in cluttered environments, that each Seeker can be produced and replaced cheaply, and that a 48-interceptor magazine can survive the pace and directions of a coordinated attack. Field exercises can earn a defense startup another trial. Consistent performance and manufacturing economics earn programs of record.
Kofman has described his aim as building "weapons of less destruction," language that traces back to his teenage work on armor and equipment for first responders. Spike turns that thesis into a specific product: small autonomous machines intended to absorb the cost and danger that would otherwise fall on soldiers, vehicles, and infrastructure. Khosla and a16z are funding Mara before the founders have published the operational data needed to prove the equation. Kofman and Raghu now have $7 million to produce that evidence.
