Why it matters

Akari targets the cost of generating realistic visual data for simulated robot training. Its published results compare against Unreal Engine renders, so the key unanswered technical test is whether the output improves policy performance on real robots.

A robotics camera lens reflects a simulated test arena beside a blurred robotics testing space.

Midcentury has launched Akari, a learned renderer that generates simulated camera images from physics-engine data, with the aim of making visual robot training less dependent on computationally expensive rendering. The company says the model works with any physics engine and will be available through its Matrix simulation platform, which is taking early-access requests.
