MiniMax, the generative AI company founded by Yan Junjie, is pitching H3 as a generator for animated game sprites, extending the video model into a production task usually handled through illustration and animation tools.

MiniMax said in an official X post that video models such as H3 can understand a walking character's movement while some image-generation workflows struggle to keep the action consistent from frame to frame. The post closed with a direct invitation:

The comparison is promotional. The supplied materials include no independent benchmark, repeatable test or side-by-side methodology showing that H3 outperforms a named image model or another video generator on character motion. The post still points to a useful product thesis: a video model that generates motion across time may be a better starting point for animated assets than a sequence of separately generated images.

MiniMax launched H3 on July 31. The game-sprite post is a positioning move around that launch rather than a new model release.

Yan built MiniMax after spending over six years at SenseTime, where he served as a vice president and deputy head of its research institute, according to MiniMax's Hong Kong prospectus. He studied mathematics at Southeast University, earned a doctorate in artificial intelligence from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Automation and conducted postdoctoral research at Tsinghua University.

Yan holds both the CEO and CTO jobs at MiniMax, keeping research strategy under the founder's direct control. The prospectus identifies executive director Zhou Yucong as MiniMax's visual-model research leader.

A video model for an image-asset problem

A walking sprite is a compact test of temporal consistency. The character's proportions, clothing, colors and direction need to survive across every frame, while the movement must loop without a visible jump. Small errors that may pass unnoticed in an isolated image become obvious when the frames play in sequence.

That requirement gives MiniMax a plausible opening. H3 already generates a time-ordered clip, while an image model may need to recreate the same character independently for each pose. Developers could sample frames from an H3 clip and turn them into a sprite sheet, provided the output preserves identity, camera position and a usable motion cycle.

The current H3 API reference lists clips between four and 15 seconds at 768P or 2K and 24 frames per second. Image references could help a developer preserve a character design, while motion-reference video could guide a specific walk, run or attack animation.

Those capabilities do not amount to a finished sprite pipeline. Developers still have to isolate the character, remove or standardize the background, select frames, align dimensions and close the animation loop. The generated clip may also contain more frames than a sprite animation requires, creating another selection and cleanup step.

MiniMax designed H3 around a broader attempt to combine tasks that previous model generations handled separately. MiniMax says H3 can perform text-to-video, image-to-video, first-and-last-frame generation, motion transfer, multimodal referencing and audiovisual generation through one model.

MiniMax's push from demonstrations into workflows

The game-sprite post fits MiniMax's wider distribution push for H3. RuntimeWire reported that MiniMax will present H3 at ModCon in San Francisco on August 18, following separate sessions and demonstrations aimed at developers and creators.

MiniMax needs those concrete workflows. MiniMax began trading in Hong Kong on January 9, 2026, after pricing its offering, according to Hong Kong exchange filings. Its prospectus reported $53.4 million in revenue for the first nine months of 2025, compared with $30.5 million for all of 2024. H3-specific usage and revenue are not established by the launch materials.

Game production gives MiniMax a narrower sales story than general AI filmmaking. A developer deciding whether H3 can create a walk cycle can run a bounded test, inspect each frame and calculate the cleanup time. That evaluation is easier to connect to production costs than a cinematic demonstration built to impress on social media.

Competition is already moving toward temporal and physical continuity. Runway's Gen-4.5 materials emphasize motion and visual consistency. PixVerse R1 pursues a different game-related target: continuous 1080P video that responds to user input in real time.

H3 currently generates fixed clips rather than a persistent interactive world. That constraint can still suit prebuilt game assets, where the desired output is a reusable animation cycle rather than live video generated during play.

The production test is repeatability

Game developers will judge H3 on repeated, controlled generation. A usable system must preserve the same character across walking, running, jumping, attacking and idle states. It must also let a studio reproduce an art direction across dozens or hundreds of assets without extensive manual repair.

A single successful walking clip cannot establish that reliability. Useful validation would show multiple characters, prompts and seeds, disclose the share of generations that survive cleanup, and measure how much artist time remains after generation.

Rights management also becomes material when generated characters move into commercial games. Disney, Universal, Warner Bros. Discovery and related plaintiffs filed a copyright lawsuit against MiniMax in September 2025, alleging that Hailuo generated unauthorized versions of protected characters. The allegations have not been adjudicated. Studios using H3 for production assets will need clear provenance for reference images and generated designs.

MiniMax's larger bet is that a general-purpose multimodal model can earn adoption through specific jobs. Game sprites are a small use case beside advertising and film production, yet they expose the technical issue that increasingly defines video generation: whether a model can keep a subject coherent while it moves. H3 now has a clear test. Developers need the evidence that it can pass repeatedly.
