Nous Research adds Perplexity Fast Search to Hermes Agent, says it is free

Why it matters

A search integration can reduce setup friction and give Perplexity distribution through Hermes. The key open point is the meaning of "free": Nous's post promises availability across Portal tiers, while its pricing page describes hosted tools as a paid-plan benefit.

Nous Research said on September 24th that Perplexity's Fast Search is available inside Hermes Agent and free for all Nous Portal tiers. The announcement gives Hermes users another managed web-search option, while leaving a key pricing detail unclear: what "free for all tiers" means for Portal's $0 plan.

In its X post, Nous Research said Perplexity built Fast Search "for agents." It also linked to a post from Perplexity's developer account. Neither post, in the material available here, gives a latency figure, query limit, accuracy benchmark or technical explanation of how the search is wired into Hermes. "Fast" is the product description, not a measured comparison.

The free-access claim also needs a careful reading alongside Nous's current Portal pricing page. The page lists a Free plan at $0 with free models, standard rate limits and $0 in monthly credits; it lists hosted tool usage among the benefits of its paid plans. That makes the announcement's phrase "all Nous Portal tiers" consequential, but not self-explanatory. It could mean Fast Search itself carries no separate per-query charge for eligible Portal accounts, or that the search is newly included even in the free tier. The posts do not spell out which interpretation applies, or whether any limits attach.

For Hermes users, the practical change is about reducing setup and routing friction. The agent's documentation describes a web-search system that can use several backends, with selection configured in Hermes. Its Portal integration also positions the Nous Tool Gateway as a way to access hosted tools through a single account rather than configuring separate credentials for each service. Adding a Perplexity-backed option gives users another route for search without requiring them to treat Hermes as a single-provider agent.

That flexibility fits Hermes's role as an open-source agent rather than a search product on its own. Nous's documentation describes Hermes as supporting external model providers and configurable tools; users can choose different providers for inference and search. The arrangement lets Perplexity put its search product in front of developers using an existing agent workflow, while Nous can make its Portal more useful as a distribution and account layer. Those are strategic implications of the integration, not stated terms of a commercial agreement.

The announcement is narrow. It does not say that Perplexity replaces Hermes's other search backends, that Fast Search is exclusive to Hermes, or that the integration changes the underlying agent model. Nor does it establish whether "free" covers only search requests or related extraction and retrieval features. Nous's documentation treats search and extraction as tool capabilities, but the post names Fast Search without specifying the covered operations.

The distinction between a free tool and a free account matters in an agent product. Search may be one step in a longer sequence of model calls and tool actions, and its standalone price does not determine the total cost of running Hermes. Portal currently ties paid subscriptions to monthly credits and hosted tool usage, while the new post describes Fast Search as free across tiers. Until the feature's limits and eligibility are clear, the firm takeaway is narrower: Nous Research says it has integrated Perplexity Fast Search into Hermes Agent and will not charge a separate fee for access across its Portal tiers.
