Opalite Health is hiring its first GTM employee to sell AI interpretation to hospitals
Cathleen Kuo and Alex Mehregan want one early hire to own discovery, demos, pricing, security review and contracting from scratch.

Opalite's first sales hire must turn a founder-led clinical AI project into a hospital product that can survive procurement, regulation and growing competition.

Cathleen Kuo and Alex Mehregan are advertising Opalite Health's first dedicated go-to-market role, asking one hire to build an enterprise sales operation around their AI medical interpreter. The San Mateo position covers the entire path into a hospital: prospecting, product demonstrations, pricing, security review, contracting and the sales process that later hires would inherit.
For Kuo, a physician and Opalite Health's CEO, the product began with a failure inside her own family. She writes on Opalite Health's company page that she grew up in Taiwan and arrived in the United States speaking little English. Her parents never became fluent. When her mother had a medical emergency, the family waited 15 minutes for a phone interpreter, parts of the conversation were lost, and she was sent home with a misdiagnosis and the wrong medication. She returned two days later with severe complications.
Kuo later encountered the same language gaps while treating patients. Mehregan, Opalite Health's CTO, brought the other half of the founding pair: a UC Berkeley electrical engineering and computer science background and experience working on Siri and system-level products at Apple.
The founders started Opalite Health in 2025 and joined Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch. YC currently describes Opalite Health as a three-person operation, while Opalite Health's leadership page also lists former Meta engineer Joshua Fink as chief product officer. A founding sales hire would therefore enter while senior staff can still move directly between customer calls, product decisions and deployment work.
One seller, the entire hospital sales cycle
Opalite Health's listing is unusually direct about what has yet to be built. There is no inherited marketing operation or mature pipeline. The hire is expected to create outbound campaigns, establish relationships with clinicians, executives, operators and IT leaders, and feed what those buyers say back into product strategy.
The displayed compensation range is $70,000-$200,000, with 0.10%-0.30% equity. The body of the listing specifies a $70,000 base salary plus uncapped commission, making the upper end dependent on sales compensation rather than a fixed base.
That remit turns the role into an extension of the founders rather than a conventional account executive position. Hospital software sales require a technically credible demonstration, a clinical case, security approval, integration planning and a contract that can survive procurement. Opalite Health wants its first seller to learn all of those steps and convert them into a process.
The timing follows an early push from research and product development into commercial deployment. A California Health Care Foundation report said Opalite Health began as an academic project focused on training and validating multilingual healthcare models. Kuo told the report that the data, training and validation had to come before the market.
Opalite Health now says its product is used daily across over 10 states, spanning hospitals, community health centers, home-health organizations, telehealth providers and clinics. Those figures remain company-reported, and Opalite Health has not attached an exact customer count to the hiring push.
Selling software where errors carry clinical consequences
The Opalite Health product provides real-time speech-to-speech interpretation across over 150 languages and dialects on phones, tablets, computers, telehealth systems and telephone lines. It also generates encounter records and clinical notes for electronic health records.
Opalite Health's Guardian system monitors translated sentences and flags errors, while certified interpreters can review higher-risk interactions. That oversight matters because current federal and California rules do not treat AI as a stand-alone substitute for qualified medical interpreters in clinical, legal or consent-related settings, according to the California Health Care Foundation report. Hospitals therefore need a defensible policy for deciding when software can assist and when a human interpreter must take over.
Opalite Health markets accuracy as a core sales argument. Its public validation page claims over 90% fewer errors than certified medical interpreters in Cantonese, Mandarin and Spanish during a blinded evaluation presented at the 2026 Pediatric Academic Societies meeting. The page publishes error counts and statistical results, while directing clinical buyers to request the full study for the complete method and error taxonomy.
The commercial case rests on cost and workflow as well. In an Opalite Health customer case study, CIFC Health in Danbury, Connecticut, reported over $5,000 in monthly interpretation savings, 8.3-minute shorter interpreted visits on average and daily use by over 50 staff members. Those results come from a single customer profile published by Opalite Health, rather than a broad independent analysis.
A crowded route into the hospital
Opalite Health is entering sales as language-service providers and other startups add AI to medical interpretation. Boostlingo combines automated interpretation with access to professional interpreters, giving hospital buyers a hybrid option from an established language-services vendor. Vocality Health, another San Francisco YC startup, also sells voice and video translation designed for hospital workflows.
Incumbents are buying into the category as well. In June 2026, AMN Healthcare announced its acquisition of Jaide Health, adding AI translation to a language-access operation that already sells into health systems. Opalite Health's first GTM hire will be competing for contracts against vendors with existing procurement relationships, human interpreter networks and larger sales organizations.
Opalite Health has raised $700,000, led by Y Combinator and Forum Ventures, according to the California Health Care Foundation report. Coyote Ventures has also disclosed an investment, and Opalite Health said on August 6th that Robinhood Ventures Fund II had joined its backers. Opalite Health did not attach an investment amount to that announcement.
For Kuo and Mehregan, the founding GTM search marks a practical shift. They have built a clinical AI product around a problem Kuo experienced as a child and later confronted as a physician. The next piece is institutional: finding a seller who can persuade hospitals that faster interpretation can meet the safety, oversight and contracting standards that healthcare buyers demand.
