OpenAI brings GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 reasoning to ChatGPT Voice
Users can choose a model and reasoning effort, while OpenAI retires Voice's separate Instant, Medium, and High intelligence settings.

Why it matters
Voice is becoming a front end for OpenAI's full model stack, giving Astra a path into frequent consumer interactions rather than reserving it for deliberate text and agent workflows.
OpenAI added GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 to ChatGPT Voice on September 9th, letting the voice interface call on its frontier models when a request requires web search or heavier reasoning. Users can also select the model and reasoning effort through the controls already used in text conversations, according to OpenAI's updated ChatGPT release notes.
