OpenAI brings GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 reasoning to ChatGPT Voice

Users can choose a model and reasoning effort, while OpenAI retires Voice's separate Instant, Medium, and High intelligence settings.

OpenAI added GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 to ChatGPT Voice on September 9th, letting the voice interface call on its frontier models when a request requires web search or heavier reasoning. Users can also select the model and reasoning effort through the controls already used in text conversations, according to OpenAI's updated ChatGPT release notes.

The release confirms an update Chris (@ChrisGPT) surfaced in a post on X Wednesday. It expands ChatGPT Voice beyond the models that handle the immediate audio conversation, giving spoken requests access to the same class of reasoning systems OpenAI has been pushing into its text, research and computer-use products.

That distinction matters because OpenAI designed GPT-Live, introduced on July 8th, around the latency demands of conversation. GPT-Live-1's instant setting originally used GPT-5.5 Instant in the background, while its Medium and High settings used GPT-5.5 Thinking. OpenAI said at launch that Voice could draw on frontier models for harder answers, though the available controls were framed as three Voice-specific intelligence levels.

The September 9th update replaces those levels with explicit model and reasoning choices. OpenAI said it is deprecating the separate Instant, Medium and High Voice settings. The result is a cleaner division of labor: GPT-Live continues to manage the fast, interruptible spoken exchange, while GPT-5.6 or Astra can handle requests that require additional reasoning or search.

Astra moves beyond the text box

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3rd, six days before adding it to Voice. The model launched first for a limited set of organizations, with OpenAI planning a phased rollout across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, as well as its API, Microsoft Azure and Amazon Bedrock. Access in Voice still depends on the user's subscription plan and applicable usage limits.

Astra is built for longer, multi-step work across browsing, software engineering, computer use and professional tasks. Those capabilities change what a voice session can plausibly cover. A user can begin with an ordinary spoken question, ask ChatGPT to search for current information, and move into a more demanding analysis without leaving Voice or restating the request in a text conversation.

OpenAI has also attached stricter monitoring to Astra because the model reached the company's Critical cybersecurity capability threshold. Its safeguards can pause or stop work when monitoring systems detect potentially unauthorized behavior. OpenAI has acknowledged that those checks may interrupt legitimate tasks, including defensive security work.

Voice therefore becomes another distribution surface for Astra, rather than a separate product with a lower ceiling on intelligence. OpenAI is placing its newest model behind an interface used for short, frequent and often hands-free interactions, moving frontier reasoning closer to routine consumer behavior.

Voice limits get simpler, and less forgiving

OpenAI paired the model update with revised daily limits. Plus users receive up to three hours of GPT-Live-1, while the $100-a-month Pro plan includes up to 15 hours. The $200-a-month Pro plan includes unlimited GPT-Live-1 use. Go users receive up to three hours of GPT-Live-1 mini, and Free users have limited access to the mini model. Usage is measured over a rolling 24-hour period.

Plus and Pro accounts will no longer fall back to GPT-Live mini after reaching their Voice allowance. That simplifies the model lineup, though it also removes the lower-capability extension that previously kept a conversation running after the main limit expired. ChatGPT instead alerts users when they reach the applicable limit.

The underlying Voice experience remains GPT-Live-1 or GPT-Live-1 mini, depending on the plan. Live supports simultaneous listening and speaking, web search, memory, text and image inputs, and visual result cards. It does not currently support video, screen sharing, connected apps or plugins; those mobile visual features remain available through OpenAI's older Advanced Voice option for eligible subscribers.

OpenAI's latest update turns model selection into a shared control across text and speech. The practical bet is that users should not have to decide whether a question belongs in Voice before asking it. ChatGPT can keep the conversational interface fast, then bring in Astra when the conversation stops being simple.
