Why it matters

OpenAI is subsidizing access to its specialized biology model while keeping GPT-Rosalind behind institutional review. The plan could bring the model into academic workflows, while seat limits, approval and the lack of API access restrict how labs can use it.

OpenAI is offering eligible U.S. university labs up to 30 free seats for GPT-Rosalind, its life-sciences model, under a new academic plan announced October 15th. The Rosalind Academic Plan covers access for up to 12 months; labs must separately clear OpenAI's trusted-access review to use GPT-Rosalind. The company also described the offer in an announcement on X.
