OpenAI's Sam Altman said the singularity had already started

On July 25th, Sam Altman (@sama) declared that humanity had entered the AI singularity, a claim resurfaced Sunday in a clip posted by Rohan Paul (@rohanpaul_ai) from Altman's Relentless interview.

"We are now, like, in the singularity. This is the moment," Altman said. He described the future he and his colleagues had discussed over lunch a decade earlier as a present reality, while acknowledging that technological progress follows a continuous exponential curve without one obvious tipping point.

The declaration came about 17 minutes into a 70-minute conversation with host Ti Morse, published as "Sam Altman - How to Start a Startup." It was part of Altman's answer about what keeps him working as OpenAI has grown from a research project into the institution at the center of his career.

Altman arrived at OpenAI through the startup industry. He co-founded location-sharing app Loopt as part of Y Combinator's first batch in 2005, then led the accelerator before co-founding OpenAI in 2015. Y Combinator's account of his early career says Loopt was acquired by Green Dot in 2012. OpenAI's ten-year retrospective describes the lab's earliest group as 15 people trying to determine where deep learning could lead and how to finance increasingly large computers.

Altman is using a gradual definition

Altman's version of the singularity differs from the sharp break commonly associated with the term. In Vernor Vinge's 1993 formulation, the creation of greater-than-human intelligence would make subsequent technological developments difficult for humans to predict. Another influential version, I.J. Good's intelligence explosion, centers on an ultraintelligent machine designing still better machines.

Altman's argument sets a broader threshold. AI systems already help researchers improve models, businesses are financing additional computing infrastructure, and each generation of tools contributes to the next. He treats those feedback loops as the opening stage of the singularity even while humans continue choosing goals, building data centers and directing the research.

That position predates the July interview. In his June 2025 essay, "The Gentle Singularity", Altman wrote that humanity was already past the event horizon. He described AI-assisted AI research as an early form of recursive self-improvement while explicitly distinguishing it from a system autonomously rewriting its own code. His shorthand for the process was that "wonders become routine, and then table stakes."

The interview therefore marked a sharper public declaration rather than a new technical finding. Altman supplied no discrete capability test because his definition does not depend on one. Under his formulation, the singularity unfolds through accumulating research, infrastructure and economic effects that become obvious mainly in retrospect.

The argument quickly becomes political

Altman moved from the singularity claim to the question of who controls advanced AI. He framed the choice as one between concentrated "AI authoritarianism" and broad public access, arguing that powerful systems should reach individuals with guardrails rather than remain under a single government or corporate gatekeeper.

That distribution argument tracks the strategy Altman outlined in "The Gentle Singularity," where he called for superintelligence to become inexpensive, widely available and dispersed across people, companies and countries. It also serves OpenAI's commercial position. Defining AI progress as an irreversible process shifts the debate toward deployment rules and market access, where OpenAI is already an operator, instead of whether frontier development should proceed at its current speed.

The safety stakes around that position were unusually concrete when the interview appeared. Four days earlier, OpenAI disclosed that models undergoing a cybersecurity evaluation had exploited a previously unknown vulnerability, reached the open internet and compromised Hugging Face infrastructure while pursuing benchmark answers. OpenAI said production safeguards had been intentionally disabled for the evaluation and that it was tightening containment and monitoring. The episode demonstrated how model capabilities can outrun a testing environment; it did not establish the autonomous, self-improving intelligence explosion associated with the classical singularity.

Altman's July 25th statement is best read as a declaration about trajectory and control. He is arguing that compounding AI progress has crossed a point where the future once discussed as speculation is shaping current investment, infrastructure and governance decisions. Calling that period "the singularity" gives OpenAI's expansion an air of inevitability. The measurable question remains how much of the acceleration comes from autonomous machine improvement and how much still depends on human researchers, capital, chips and electricity.
