OpenAI tests Sponsored Agents to turn ChatGPT ads into customer conversations

HubSpot and Shopify integrations give advertisers external campaign management, attribution and product-catalog connections as OpenAI tests conversational sales agents.

Why it matters

Advertisers can now connect ChatGPT campaigns to HubSpot attribution and Shopify purchase data while testing AI agents as a sales channel. The operator's challenge is measuring whether those conversations convert without blurring the boundary between paid persuasion and independent answers.

A digital screen displays a sophisticated conversational agent helping a user with product selection, integrating e-commerce and marketing information.

Sam Altman's OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents on September 16th. The format lets people move from a ChatGPT ad into a clearly labeled conversation with an advertiser's AI agent.

The format advances a commercial project that would have looked foreign to the OpenAI Altman co-founded in 2015. OpenAI's founding announcement described a nonprofit research organization free from the need to generate a financial return. Altman, who previously co-founded the location-sharing startup Loopt and later ran Y Combinator, has since built OpenAI into a consumer platform with subscriptions, enterprise software, APIs and now a growing advertising operation.

Advertising gives Altman another way to finance ChatGPT's compute costs while preserving a free product with broad distribution. OpenAI said on August 31st that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in fewer than 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers. Those figures are self-reported. OpenAI did not provide underlying revenue or customer data in its August 31st announcement. The advertising run rate also remains small beside OpenAI's March claim that it was generating $2 billion in total monthly revenue.

Those numbers help explain today's product bundle. OpenAI is moving beyond selling space underneath an answer and building the campaign software, attribution tools and conversational sales experience around that inventory. For founders and marketing operators, the practical test is whether these tools can produce attributable customers without adding another disconnected campaign workflow.

From ad click to sponsored salesperson

Sponsored Agents begin only after a user chooses to engage with an ad. OpenAI says the resulting conversation is separate from ChatGPT's independent answer and from the original chat.

A furniture seller, for example, could let a shopper ask whether a table fits a particular room, how many people it seats or how its finish should be maintained. That interaction resembles a sales associate working from the advertiser's approved product information, positioned inside the interface where the shopper began researching the purchase.

OpenAI is testing the format with selected US advertisers, whose names, pricing and performance benchmarks were not included in the announcement. Businesses can apply through the OpenAI Ads onboarding page. The distinction between sponsored conversations and independent answers will carry much of the product's trust burden.

OpenAI's advertising principles say ads remain separate from answers, advertisers cannot access private conversations and users can control personalization. Ad selection can use the current conversation and, when personalization is enabled, signals from a user's broader ChatGPT activity.

That boundary deserves scrutiny because ChatGPT users encounter product answers, ad selection, sponsored agents and data controls within the same interface. 404 Media reported, based on leaked internal documents and prompts it reviewed, that OpenAI contractors working on Project Lily sometimes review entire ChatGPT conversations and user-memory summaries as part of a separate product-improvement program. OpenAI's consumer-data FAQ says authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access content to improve model performance unless users opt out. Sponsored Agents add another reason for OpenAI to make its internal data divisions legible to users rather than merely visible in policy documents.

ChatGPT starts doing the marketer's work

OpenAI is also turning ChatGPT into an operating interface for advertisers. Through an Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work, marketers can use natural-language instructions to create, update and analyze campaigns. OpenAI says the system can turn a website or campaign brief into ads, explain performance and recommend changes.

Inside Ads Manager, advertisers can generate suggested images and copy based on a landing page and campaign objective. An optional text-customization feature can rewrite existing headlines and descriptions for the context of a conversation and translate copy into a user's preferred language.

The human advertiser remains responsible for the output. OpenAI's advertising terms assign customers responsibility for campaigns, settings and AI-generated material produced through the advertising service. That allocation matters when automated creative tools produce unsupported claims, mistranslations or imagery that conflicts with an advertiser's brand rules.

OpenAI is effectively selling both sides of the workflow: the inventory where an ad appears and the AI labor used to create, optimize and explain it. Google has been adding agentic campaign tools to Google Ads and Analytics, while Meta's Business Agent answers questions, recommends products and closes sales across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

ChatGPT users often describe a goal, budget and constraints in full sentences. OpenAI's wager is that this context can produce a more useful commercial conversation than a keyword, social profile or abandoned cart.

HubSpot and Shopify close the measurement gap

OpenAI named HubSpot, the customer-platform company founded by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah, as its first CRM partner and Shopify, the commerce software company co-founded by Tobias Lutke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake, as its first ecommerce partner. The choices connect ChatGPT Ads to external systems for CRM workflows, product catalogs and conversion measurement.

The HubSpot integration lets customers create campaigns, compare ChatGPT Ads with channels including Google and LinkedIn, and attribute contacts or deals to ChatGPT spending. HubSpot automatically adds tracking parameters when auto-tracking is enabled. HubSpot's documentation labels the integration a beta and says HubSpot receives a user token that permits it to view and manage the connected ad account.

HubSpot is a fitting first partner. Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah founded HubSpot after observing that buyers wanted useful information instead of interruptions. Sponsored Agents apply that thesis to paid placement: the ad earns attention first, then the conversation has to answer a real question.

US merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads Shopify app to sync inventory, create campaigns from a product catalog and measure purchases using Shopify pixel and conversion events. The app listing dates its launch to September 3rd, nearly two weeks before OpenAI's announcement. OpenAI says access will expand internationally on September 23rd in markets where ChatGPT Ads operates.

Shopify's listing says the app can view customer names and email addresses, device and browsing data, products and collections, while editing marketing events and web or server pixels.

The integrations address a basic weakness facing any new ad network. Marketers will tolerate another campaign dashboard only when it can prove sales or qualified leads. HubSpot supplies business-to-business attribution, while Shopify supplies product data and purchase events. Sponsored Agents provide the new format sitting between discovery and conversion.

The rollout pairs a new conversational ad format with campaign creation, CRM attribution, product-catalog syncing and commerce measurement. OpenAI has established demand for ChatGPT ad inventory by its own account. Sponsored Agents will test whether conversational context can improve the part advertisers ultimately pay for: turning attention into action without weakening the trust that brought users to ChatGPT in the first place.
