Parasol Med Tech discloses $2.365M sold for gel-based heart device

Parasol Med Tech has sold 94.6% of its $2.5M offering target for a patient-specific gel seal competing with Watchman and Amulet.

Why it matters

Parasol is turning a practicing cardiologist's procedural experience into a personalized implant, with enough capital to pursue prototype and preclinical proof points.

Dr. Atman Shah's Parasol Med Tech has sold $2.365 million of a planned $2.5 million equity offering, according to a Form D filed with the SEC on September 10th. The filing lists 29 investors and $135,000 remaining in the round.

The financing began with a first sale on May 26th, more than three months before Parasol disclosed it. The Form D is a new notice rather than an amendment, and it reports the amount sold through September 10th. Parasol has closed 94.6% of the target.

Shah brings an unusually direct founder thesis to medical-device development: he has spent years putting left atrial appendage closure devices into patients and built Parasol around the problems he saw during those procedures. He is a professor of medicine, clinical director of cardiology and co-director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the University of Chicago Medicine. His UChicago profile says he has practiced since 2002 and has authored more than 50 abstracts and publications.

Shah studied international relations at Stanford before earning his medical degree at the University of Illinois. He completed internal-medicine training at Northwestern and cardiology fellowships at UCLA-affiliated hospitals. That path eventually put him inside a structural-heart market dominated by devices built to fit patients whose anatomy can vary significantly.

A clinician's workaround becomes a startup

Atrial fibrillation can allow blood to collect inside the left atrial appendage, a pouch attached to the heart's upper-left chamber. Clots formed there can travel to the brain and cause a stroke. UChicago Medicine estimates that roughly 40 million Americans have AFib.

Blood thinners remain a standard preventive treatment, but bleeding risks and poor adherence make them unsuitable for some patients. Doctors can instead use a catheter to place an implant that closes the appendage. The established options include Boston Scientific's Watchman and Abbott's Amplatzer Amulet.

Shah has performed left atrial appendage closure procedures for more than 10 years, according to UChicago Medicine's account of Parasol's origins. Parasol says he has completed more than 1,000 closures, a figure supplied by Parasol rather than independently verified.

His complaint is geometric. Existing implants use fixed shapes and sizes, while the anatomy they must seal varies among patients. Shah told UChicago Medicine that rounded devices can leave some patients ineligible for effective closure or create gaps that contribute to leaks and clot formation. Conventional implants can also rely on hooks to secure themselves inside thin heart tissue.

Parasol is developing a catheter-delivered, gel-based implant designed to conform to each patient's anatomy. Parasol says the approach could improve sealing, limit trauma and reduce residual leaks or device-related clots. Those remain development goals rather than demonstrated clinical outcomes.

"Parasol was born from those experiences and from a desire to create a safer, more effective solution for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation," Shah said in a June 17th announcement from the University of Chicago's Polsky Center.

A round built for de-risking

The SEC filing reports no sales commissions or finder fees. It does not name the 29 investors or identify a lead, and Parasol has not disclosed a valuation.

The investor count is notable relative to the round's size. The $2.365 million sold works out to an average of roughly $81,500 per investor, although the filing does not show how the checks were distributed. The structure gives Parasol a broad capitalization base at a stage when the device still needs engineering and preclinical validation.

Parasol also received a separate $250,000 George Shultz Innovation Fund award in June. The Polsky Center said that capital would support prototype development, preclinical testing and data generation for future regulatory and clinical milestones. The $250,000 should not be added automatically to the Form D total because its financing terms were not specified alongside the SEC offering.

Evan Singer is listed as an executive officer and director in the Form D. Shah remains founder and chief medical officer.

Competing with devices already inside hundreds of thousands of patients

Parasol's personalization pitch enters a category with entrenched manufacturers, clinical evidence and physician training networks. Boston Scientific says its Watchman platform has treated more than 600,000 patients. Abbott's Amulet uses a plug-and-disc design intended to close the appendage at its opening.

Parasol is betting that a conformable gel can reduce the compromises involved in matching fixed-size implants to irregular anatomy. That thesis must survive manufacturing, catheter delivery, durability, biocompatibility and regulatory testing. A device that works conceptually can still fail when exposed to the mechanical demands of a beating heart or the economics of hospital purchasing.

The current round gives Shah capital to work through early proof points. It does not finance a commercial rollout.

Shah's advantage is proximity to the problem. He has spent more than a decade seeing where existing devices fit, where they leak and which patients cannot receive them. The $2.365 million round funds the harder part of his bet: proving that procedural experience can be turned into a reproducible implant that regulators, physicians and patients will trust.
