Persona AI reports $65.4M sold toward a planned $142M offering

The SEC filing lists 46 investors and $76.6M remaining as Persona AI targets pre-production deliveries by the end of 2026.

Persona AI reported selling $65.36 million of securities toward a planned $141.96 million offering in a Form D filed with the SEC on September 14th.

The filing says Persona AI made its first sale on August 28th and has $76.6 million left to sell. Forty-six investors have participated. Persona AI filed the offering under Rule 506(b), covering equity, options or warrants, and securities issued when those rights are exercised.

The $141.96 million figure is the offering target. The amount raised so far is $65.36 million. The filing does not name the investors, identify a lead or disclose Persona AI's valuation and security price. It also does not label the financing as a conventional venture round.

The amount already sold is 2.4 times the $27 million pre-seed Persona AI announced in May 2025. Unity Growth and Tides Ventures co-led that earlier financing, with Mirae Asset Group, Invicta Growth, Fathom Fund, Embedded Ventures, K50 Ventures and Tola Capital among a long list of participants.

A NASA robotics reunion

The scale of the new offering rests on a founding group that has spent much of its career trying to make robots function beyond controlled demonstrations.

Radford, a Purdue-trained electrical engineer, spent roughly 15 years at NASA's Johnson Space Center, where he worked on Valkyrie, Robonaut and other robotics programs. He later founded Houston Mechatronics, which became Nauticus Robotics and developed autonomous machines for subsea work.

Pratt spent roughly two decades leading walking-robot research at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. His group placed second in the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge, and he later served as CTO of Figure AI. Akinyode's biography says he also worked on robotics at NASA before joining Nauticus, where he helped move the Aquanaut underwater robot from concept toward production.

Radford and Pratt had discussed creating a humanoid robotics business as early as 2008, according to a 2024 interview with IEEE Spectrum. They waited because the machines remained difficult to operate autonomously and difficult to commercialize. Faster perception systems and stronger demand from industrial customers eventually changed their calculation.

The new capital gives Persona AI considerably more room to attempt both useful robots and a viable business.

The money is chasing a welding robot

Persona AI's commercial thesis starts with skilled industrial work where labor shortages can delay high-value projects. Persona AI is developing modular humanoids for welding, grinding, inspection, fabrication, equipment maintenance and material handling in shipyards, construction sites, energy facilities and factories.

The focus distinguishes Persona AI from humanoid programs centered on moving boxes or supplying a general-purpose worker. Persona AI argues that a costly bipedal machine makes more economic sense when it can handle specialized tools in facilities already designed around human movement. Shipyards contain ladders, hatches, catwalks and changing work areas that are difficult to rebuild around fixed automation.

Persona AI remains a pre-production hardware developer. Its website describes its technologies as conceptual designs and prototypes that remain under development and are not yet commercially available. Persona AI expects initial pre-production deliveries around the end of 2026.

In a joint development announcement, HD Hyundai said Persona AI would work with HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Robotics and Vazil Company on humanoid welding systems for shipyards. The partners targeted prototypes by the end of 2026, followed by field testing and the start of commercial deployment in 2027.

Persona AI is also working with ABS on safety and classification requirements, and has described projects with POSCO and Louisiana-based SSE Steel Fabrication. Persona AI says an early-stage R&D collaboration with Under Armour is testing textiles and external materials under heat, friction, abrasion and repetitive motion.

Capital for the gap between a demo and a shift

The filing arrives as Persona AI approaches the delivery deadlines it has set for late 2026. Reaching those milestones requires spending across robot hardware, manipulation, locomotion, perception, simulation, manufacturing and field support. Heavy-industry deployments add another layer of testing because welding quality, machine reliability and worker safety have to hold up across repeated shifts.

The offering target suggests Radford, Pratt and Akinyode are preparing Persona AI for a much larger buildout than its pre-seed round. Forty-six investors have participated, according to the SEC filing. The filing alone cannot show whether the same investors returned, which backer set the terms or how ownership changed.

It also does not establish commercial validation. Persona AI has announced development programs and future deployment targets, while its own materials describe the machines as prototypes. Moving from a teleoperated weld to a robot that can reliably work in an active shipyard remains the central engineering and business challenge.

Radford and Pratt spent years waiting for humanoids to become technically and economically credible. Persona AI has now reported $65.36 million sold through this offering to test that judgment. Its next measure of progress will come from the shop floor: repeatable work, delivered on schedule, using the tools industrial customers already own.
