Physical Superintelligence launches with $58M seed for virtual physicists
Physical Superintelligence says Matt Pines, Alex Klokus and Alexander Wissner-Gross started the company with Emmy, a simulation platform aimed first at data-center design. PSI also calls itself a founding technical partner of an Alpha Centauri mission.

Why it matters
PSI is asking data-center operators to trust software with coupled power, cooling, networking and compute decisions. Customer deployments and quantified engineering gains would provide evidence for a lab making much larger claims about machine-led physics.

Physical Superintelligence says in its launch announcement that it launched with a $58 million seed round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, with Emmy aimed first at optimizing power, cooling, networking and compute systems in terrestrial and orbital data centers. Founders Matt Pines, Alex Klokus and Alexander Wissner-Gross are pitching the company as a physics lab staffed partly by "virtual physicists."
The lab calls its platform Emmy, after physicist Amalie Emmy Noether. Physical Superintelligence says Emmy can break research problems into testable hypotheses, run them through simulations in parallel and verify the resulting work. Its first commercial target is narrower and easier to invoice: the interacting power, cooling, networking and compute systems inside terrestrial and orbital data centers.
PSI says the announced round backs both a long-duration research program and the development of Emmy as a commercial engineering product. The company says the capital will support recruiting, Emmy's models, simulation infrastructure and verification systems, and research across sensing, energy and computing.
According to the launch announcement, Dragon Global, Robot Ventures, Solari, Susa, Ron Conway's SV Angel, Valkyrie, Balaji Srinivasan and Anthony Scaramucci participated in the financing, alongside unnamed individuals from OpenAI, NVIDIA, SoftBank Energy, Oracle, Hugging Face, JUMP Capital and the a16z Scout Fund. Physical Superintelligence did not attach a valuation to the announcement.
Emmy starts with data centers
Pines describes the commercial work and the scientific mission as stages of the same operation. "Today, that means giving our customers a measurable edge to design and run their data centers more efficiently," he said in Physical Superintelligence's launch announcement. "Tomorrow, it means going after physics problems that have been untouched for decades."
Physical Superintelligence says Emmy models coupled infrastructure problems before construction and can identify retrofit gains in operating facilities. The release describes a "sovereign reasoning engine" connected to a curated simulation inventory.
PSI's homepage says the company developed Get Physics Done, or GPD, an AI copilot built by physicists for physicists, and is open-sourcing it through GitHub. That public release gives the founders an inspectable software project around the virtual-physicist thesis. The supplied materials do not establish customer deployments, revenue or independently verified performance for either GPD or Emmy.
Three founders, three different routes into physics AI
Pines is a physics-trained national-security analyst rather than a career academic physicist. He studied physics and philosophy at Johns Hopkins University and earned a master's degree in philosophy and public policy from the London School of Economics. Before taking the CEO role at Physical Superintelligence, he served as executive director of the Bitcoin Policy Institute and as director of intelligence at PinnacleOne, SentinelOne's strategic advisory group. His Bitcoin Policy Institute biography says he also conducted national-preparedness and emerging-technology assessments for the U.S. government.
That career gives Pines a useful role in a research business whose customers, investors and eventual government partners will care about energy, compute capacity and strategic technology. His job is to turn an expansive scientific thesis into a sequence of fundable and sellable programs.
Wissner-Gross supplies the deepest academic credentials. He earned simultaneous MIT degrees in physics, electrical science and engineering, and mathematics, followed by a physics doctorate at Harvard covering neuromorphic computing, machine learning and programmable matter. His previous research includes a 2013 Physical Review Letters paper proposing a relationship between intelligent behavior and entropy maximization. His biography says he has founded, backed or advised dozens of technology ventures.
Klokus brings the company-building and media side. He co-founded Futurism and later founded the SALT Fund. His SALT biography says he built and sold the media company Futurism and the sleep and wellness business Gravity. At Physical Superintelligence, that operating background sits alongside two founders whose careers have centered on physics, AI, policy and technical research.
An interstellar proof point with terrestrial questions
Physical Superintelligence also identifies itself as the founding technical partner for the Fermi Explorer Mission, which is seeking to send an AI-planned mission toward Alpha Centauri. PSI says it validated the mission's physics, found a substantially more efficient trajectory within its mass and budget constraints, and plans to contribute scientific instruments. Those mission claims come from PSI's announcement, which does not set out the improvement numerically.
The interstellar project gives the founders a vivid demonstration target, while data centers provide the first stated commercial application. Together, the projects show the breadth of PSI's pitch: apply the same simulation-led approach to infrastructure engineering and an interstellar mission.
Investors have already assigned substantial value to the broader physics-AI category. London-based physics-AI engineering company PhysicsX said in June that it raised a $300 million Series C at an approximately $2.4 billion valuation. PhysicsX focuses on industrial engineering and says its models can predict physical behavior in seconds, with deployments across aerospace, semiconductors, automotive, energy and materials.
Physical Superintelligence is entering at an earlier stage with a wider scientific claim. PSI says the announced capital will fund recruiting, Emmy's reasoning and simulation infrastructure, and research spanning sensing, energy and new computing substrates. The immediate test is concrete: whether Pines and his co-founders can document repeatable data-center savings while building a credible verification system for harder physics problems.
The $58 million seed would give PSI funding for recruiting, Emmy's development and simulation infrastructure. It also raises the standard of evidence. The founders say investors have backed a laboratory staffed partly by software. Data-center operators will decide whether those virtual physicists can earn their keep.
