ProvenMetal opens seven-day US circuit-board service for defense teams

Trinity engineers Johnny Doyle and Will Carkner are coordinating U.S. suppliers and partners rather than starting with a factory.

Johnny Doyle and Will Carkner (@carknerwill) have opened ProvenMetal for orders, promising to source, build, test and ship printed circuit boards inside the United States within seven business days.

The San Francisco operation is aimed first at drone and defense teams, where a slow board revision can hold up an entire hardware program. Customers upload their manufacturing files, approve a quote and start a seven-business-day clock that ProvenMetal says ends when the completed boards ship. The standard turnaround carries no expedite fee.

That commitment is the product. ProvenMetal manages component sourcing, fabrication, assembly, testing and inspection as a single job, replacing the chain of distributors and manufacturers that hardware teams often coordinate themselves. ProvenMetal says each order ships with records covering the parts, process and inspection work.

The harder part begins after the quote. Doyle and Carkner are building around a network of U.S. suppliers and manufacturing partners, which lets them sell a national production service without first financing a large factory. It also makes their delivery promise dependent on procurement and partner performance, particularly when a design requires scarce components or an unusual fabrication process.

A YC rejection produced the company

ProvenMetal emerged from a fast pivot. Doyle and Carkner initially applied to Y Combinator with Syncra, an office energy-management project built around connected power strips. Doyle had worked on IoT building-management systems, while Carkner had handled circuit-board testing for hydrogen-battery developer Lumindt.

YC told them to pursue a larger problem. According to a June 23rd account from Trinity College Dublin, the pair switched to electronics manufacturing, flew to San Francisco and held more than 30 conversations with manufacturers and hardware companies before a second YC interview. They secured five letters of intent and entered YC's Summer 2026 batch with ProvenMetal only weeks old.

"We knew our original idea had a ceiling," Doyle told Trinity. He said the founders booked their flights an hour before their first interview and filled their calendars with customers and industry operators after landing.

The pivot matched Carkner's earlier work. Trinity says he had built boards since childhood, and ProvenMetal's YC launch page credits him with building Lumindt's PCB testing pipeline. Doyle, a mechanical and manufacturing engineer, had already shipped connected building systems. ProvenMetal gave the pair a manufacturing problem tied directly to what they had built before.

Carkner has framed the opportunity around an overlooked layer of the electronics supply chain. In a July 19th essay, he argued that U.S. industrial policy and private investment have concentrated on semiconductor fabrication while the boards, assembly capacity and component networks beneath finished electronics remain heavily dependent on Asia. His proposed remedy starts with shorter iteration cycles, automated quoting and domestic orders that give manufacturers a reason to expand.

ProvenMetal is selling control before capacity

ProvenMetal's public materials describe a hybrid operating model. Its YC page says the founders assemble boards from a garage in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood and X-ray every board. The current homepage says fabrication and assembly run through vetted U.S. partners managed by ProvenMetal.

For customers, ProvenMetal is offering one accountable operator across that network. The founders say they verify components against the bill of materials, coordinate fabrication and assembly, test the finished boards and preserve the build record. Later revisions are supposed to move faster because ProvenMetal retains the prior order's sourcing and production context.

That managed-network model can expand with less upfront capital than a factory. It also puts the operational burden squarely on Doyle and Carkner. A seven-day service is useful only when it works across real designs, component shortages and repeated revisions. The founders' first five letters of intent established interest; completed orders will establish whether the service level holds.

Seven days is a provenance pitch

ProvenMetal is entering a market where software-assisted quoting and fast production already exist. FlashPCB advertises quotes in minutes and lists three-, five- and 10-day manufacturing options, with the fastest automated service limited by board specifications. MacroFab routes work through a North American network that it says spans more than 100 factory lines.

CircuitHub says it routinely ships prototype assemblies in two to three days from its automated Massachusetts operation. On May 20th, CircuitHub announced a $28 million financing to expand U.S. capacity and enter Europe, after reporting more than 2 million boards shipped.

Those offers mean seven days alone does not make ProvenMetal the fastest option on paper. Doyle and Carkner are differentiating ProvenMetal through the combination of a fixed standard turn, U.S. component sourcing, domestic production and one party responsible for the whole order. That provenance matters most in regulated and defense work, where the origin of parts and manufacturing steps can carry as much weight as speed.

The federal government has treated domestic PCB capacity as a strategic supply-chain issue. A 2023 Defense Production Act determination authorized support for U.S. printed-circuit-board and advanced-packaging production. In March 2024, the Pentagon awarded $11.7 million to expand domestic PCB assembly capacity for hypersonic weapons.

ProvenMetal is positioning itself below those large industrial programs, at the point where a drone or robotics team needs the next board revision quickly enough to keep engineering work moving. Doyle and Carkner won their YC place by proving that manufacturers would discuss the problem and sign letters of intent. Their seven-day clock turns that founder story into an operating test on every order.
