Replit adds GPT-6 Astra one day after OpenAI's release

Amjad Masad (@amasad), Replit's co-founder and CEO, said on September 4th that OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra is running on Replit, giving the software-building platform access to the flagship model one day after its release.

"Astra on Replit," Masad wrote in a post on X, linking to a demonstration from a Replit user. The short confirmation places Replit among the early platforms deploying Astra while OpenAI is still limiting initial access to selected organizations.

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3rd for complex computer use, coding, research and professional workflows. OpenAI describes Astra as its most capable broadly deployed model and says wider access through ChatGPT and its API will follow over the coming days.

For Replit, getting Astra into the product quickly is part of a larger attempt to make the underlying model invisible to most users. Replit introduced Intelligent Model Routing on August 26th, a system that automatically assigns tasks to models based on quality, speed and cost. Core and Pro subscribers can still select models manually, while enterprise administrators can restrict routing to an approved set.

That makes Astra's arrival a distribution story as much as a model integration. Replit does not have to persuade every user to understand OpenAI's model lineup or decide when Astra's higher-priced inference is justified. Replit can make that decision inside Agent, where the model is judged by whether it ships working software.

OpenAI lists Astra's API price at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Those rates put pressure on coding platforms to reserve the model for tasks where its capabilities justify the cost. Replit said in August that its routing system produced comparable output quality at 65% lower cost than the previous version of Max Mode in Replit's own testing. That figure remains a Replit benchmark, and the test preceded Astra's release.

Replit is selling the harness around the model

Masad started Replit in 2016 around the premise that software creation should become accessible without requiring users to master conventional development tools. The arrival of stronger coding models has moved that thesis from browser-based programming toward agents that plan, write, test and deploy applications.

Replit launched Agent 4 in March, describing it as a system of parallel agents that can produce apps, presentations, videos and other software artifacts. On March 11th, Replit also announced a $400 million financing at a $9 billion valuation, backed by investors including Georgian, G Squared, Prysm Capital, 1789 Capital, Y Combinator, Coatue, Andreessen Horowitz, Craft Ventures and Qatar Investment Authority. Replit said the capital would fund product development, infrastructure and international expansion.

Astra gives Masad a new engine for that expansion without requiring Replit to train a frontier model itself. Replit's advantage depends on the surrounding system: sandboxes, deployment infrastructure, testing tools, model routing and the context Agent maintains while a project changes.

Replit CTO Luis Hector Chavez described Astra's value in similar terms in a Microsoft launch post, saying it moves agentic software creation beyond code generation. That distinction matters for Replit. Generating a function is increasingly available from every major model provider. Operating across a codebase, browser, database and deployment environment is where platforms can create a durable product layer.

Astra also raises the safety burden

OpenAI says Astra reached the "Critical" cybersecurity capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework. In evaluations conducted without production safeguards, OpenAI reported that Astra could identify unknown vulnerabilities and develop exploits against protected systems.

The version being deployed externally carries additional restrictions and monitoring. OpenAI says advanced offensive requests, including requests to create proof-of-concept exploits, are restricted in the initial release. OpenAI also acknowledged in its Astra safety overview that the model was better than its predecessor at controlling what appeared in its written reasoning during adversarial tests, making some behavior harder to monitor.

Those risks become practical product questions when Astra operates inside an environment built to execute code and deploy applications. Replit has spent a decade operating cloud sandboxes, and Masad has publicly argued that isolation infrastructure is a core competency rather than a commodity. Astra will test that claim under a model capable of taking longer sequences of actions with less human direction.

The integration gives Replit early access to OpenAI's newest capabilities. It also places Replit's routing, permissions and sandbox controls directly between Astra and the software its users ask the model to build.
