Rocket One offers drone-show software as a counter-drone threat simulator

Why it matters

Counter-drone systems need realistic mass attacks for testing. Rocket One is betting commercial drone choreography can become defense infrastructure, with a field evaluation as the next proof point.

Rocket One, led by CEO Robb Knie, on Tuesday made Swarm Stage AI available to U.S. defense organizations as a large-scale drone-swarm threat simulator for testing counter-drone systems.

The August 18 announcement presents Knie's product through a specific military use case: generate coordinated aerial attacks so troops, sensor makers and counter-UAS developers can test how their systems perform when many drones arrive at once. Rocket One is selling the target environment rather than another interceptor, jammer or directed-energy weapon.

Rocket One first announced Swarm Stage AI on June 22 for military, government and security organizations. That release described uses including counter-drone training, swarm-threat emulation, critical-infrastructure protection and future space-security missions. The August release emphasizes availability to U.S. defense customers for capabilities briefings, demonstrations, evaluations and potential collaborations. Rocket One has not established whether the two releases represent a launch and relaunch, expanded positioning or separate announcements. It explicitly states that the August offer carries no Defense Department contract, procurement commitment, certification or selection.

The August positioning defines a specific buyer and job: give counter-drone teams something difficult and repeatable to detect, track or defeat.

From drone choreography to adversarial training

Swarm Stage AI grew out of coordination assets and intellectual property that Rocket One says it acquired from SkyStage, a commercial drone-show operator. The inherited technology was built to control thousands of synchronized aircraft during live performances.

Knie's bet is that the same coordination problem transfers to military training. Instead of arranging an image in the night sky, operators could program saturation attacks, layered approaches and adaptive maneuvers designed to stress radar, tracking software, command systems and counter-UAS weapons.

Rocket One says Swarm Stage AI includes more than 2,500 field-tested formation and flight assets. Its AI Threat Builder is designed to translate a written scenario into coordinated, flyable behavior, while a 3D preview lets operators inspect approach paths, timing and deconfliction before launch. Customers can also edit existing formations or create new scenarios for a particular test range or defensive system.

Those scale claims come from Rocket One and have not been accompanied by independent military test results. The documented heritage is commercial: Rocket One says the underlying engine has coordinated thousands of aircraft in drone shows. Tuesday's release does not identify a completed defense exercise using Swarm Stage AI.

The distinction matters because synchronized entertainment flights and adversarial testing impose different demands. A useful threat emulator must reproduce tactics, communications constraints, multiple attack directions and changing flight profiles without creating unacceptable safety risks on a test range. Rocket One's formation library gives Knie a head start on orchestration. Defense customers will determine whether that heritage produces representative battlefield threats.

Knie's public-company pivot

Knie is approaching the defense market as a public-company operator with a long capital-markets background. He has led Hoth Therapeutics since May 2017. Before that, he founded Lifeline Industries, worked as a semiconductor analyst at PAW Partners and served as a regional manager for American Express Financial Advisors. He also ran FoxWayne Enterprises Acquisition Corp., a Nasdaq-listed special purpose acquisition company, from 2020 to 2023.

That history helps explain the structure behind Swarm Stage AI. Rocket One is not a conventional venture-backed defense startup assembled around a newly disclosed engineering team. It is the product of a rapid repositioning of Hoth Therapeutics, a biotechnology issuer that changed its name and expanded into defense, space and advanced computing in 2026. Rocket One continues to hold its drug programs through a subsidiary while Knie builds a portfolio around autonomous systems and licensed computing technology.

The pivot arrived with financial pressure. Hoth reported an accumulated deficit of approximately $72.9 million at year-end 2025, according to its annual filing. Rocket One later reported about $8.4 million in cash as of June 12 after raising money through its at-the-market stock program.

Swarm Stage AI therefore serves two jobs for Knie. It puts acquired technology behind a near-term defense sales pitch, and it gives investors a product that can be demonstrated without waiting for Rocket One's longer-horizon semiconductor and space projects to reach maturity.

The military training problem is already visible

The demand thesis is grounded in a training gap the Pentagon has described publicly. A June 2026 Defense Department publication called for repeated practice against realistic drone threats with different platforms, communications methods and avenues of approach. It cited an October 2025 exercise at Eglin Air Force Base that progressed from individual drones to a multi-axis mass-swarm incursion.

Rocket One will not have the category to itself. Swarm Defense Technologies markets its own Swarm Threat Emulator, combining reusable target drones, a ground station and mission-planning software for coordinated counter-UAS exercises. Its offering also traces its engineering heritage to commercial drone light shows. Other vendors supply target aircraft, autonomy software and counter-drone systems that can be paired at military test ranges.

Rocket One's proposed edge is scale inherited from entertainment operations, along with a large editable library that could reduce the time required to build a new training event. Knie summarized the pitch in Tuesday's release: "Those systems need realistic threats to train against."

The next meaningful milestone is a field evaluation that shows Swarm Stage AI can safely reproduce difficult attack patterns and generate useful data for a counter-UAS customer. Capabilities briefings establish interest. A military exercise would establish whether Knie has successfully converted drone choreography into defense infrastructure.
