Why it matters

QD-Rec tests whether AI can generate a diverse set of reasons for choosing among existing options. Its early results are LLM-judged experiments, not evidence that it improves real decisions.

A researcher compares journals from several shelves beneath a Sakana sign in a university library.

Sakana AI published QD-Rec, an open-source research method that searches for different reasons to recommend an option, rather than returning a single ranked list. The release, announced on October 20th and posted by the lab the next day, targets decisions such as which company to acquire, which customers to approach and which research papers to read. The paper and project page describe an experimental system, not a customer-facing product.
