ScrollEd turns textbooks into a feed, then tells students to go deeper
The bootstrapped founders plan an October consumer launch built around vertical discovery, sideways depth and a $6.99 monthly subscription.

Why it matters
ScrollEd is testing whether the mechanics that made short-form feeds compulsive can improve study habits. Schools will need learning data before treating engagement as education.

Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff will launch ScrollEd's consumer business at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco from October 13th to 15th, putting textbooks, PDFs and lecture notes inside the interface that usually serves dance clips and product ads.
The married co-founders bootstrapped ScrollEd in 2026 after both found themselves dissatisfied with doomscrolling before bed, Gupta told TechCrunch in a September 20th report. Their response was pragmatic: keep the scrolling gesture and replace the material underneath it.
ScrollEd takes an uploaded PDF, EPUB, DOCX file, textbook or set of notes and breaks it into a feed of short idea cards, summaries, audio, AI-generated video, quizzes and mind maps. An upward swipe moves to another topic. A sideways swipe opens additional material about the current one, ending with a quiz. ScrollEd calls that two-axis interaction patent-pending, though that description remains a company claim.
Gupta brings an unusual mix to the pitch. He earned degrees in bioengineering and political science from UC San Diego, followed by a law degree from Georgetown. He later worked as a patent litigator at Dechert and Tensegrity Law Group before founding Palo Alto technology studio Filarion. He is studying AI and human purpose at Stanford. Neff studies computer science at the University of Pennsylvania and works with Gupta at Filarion, which lists ScrollEd alongside legal AI and spatial-computing projects.
That combination helps explain why ScrollEd's product pitch keeps returning to design incentives. Gupta has spent years around systems governed by rules, whether patents, public policy or software interfaces. ScrollEd treats the infinite feed as another system whose outcome depends on the objective chosen by its designer.
A feed tuned for an exit
Social feeds generally treat another minute of attention as a win. ScrollEd says it wants users to leave able to name what they learned.
"We want to meet them where they are," Gupta told TechCrunch. "We just have to be deliberate about how we use it and choose not to maximize engagement on the platform."
The sideways gesture is central to that argument. Short videos are good at creating curiosity and bad at preserving context, especially when the next upward swipe replaces the subject entirely. ScrollEd gives curiosity another direction to travel. Gupta said the founders wanted deeper exploration to feel as easy as moving to the next video.
The idea is approachable because ScrollEd is borrowing behavior rather than asking students to develop a new one. It also creates a difficult product problem. A feed that feels too much like homework loses the ease the founders are chasing. A feed that optimizes entertaining fragments can leave users with disconnected facts and a flattering illusion of progress.
ScrollEd says its AI scans chapters, headings and sections before arranging the source into a guided sequence. The website advertises summaries tied to source passages, contextual quotations and quizzes placed throughout the reading flow. Gupta told TechCrunch that ScrollEd is developing a source-checking process so material can be checked against cited references before publication.
ScrollEd's current website presents a free preview using demo documents and labels that option "coming soon." A listed Pro plan costs $6.99 per month and includes three uploads per day, full-book conversion, unlimited storage and no advertising. ScrollEd is also offering the first 200 founding members three free months for sharing the product.
Institutional plans target schools, bootcamps, study groups and corporate training programs. ScrollEd plans to charge annual license fees and give institutional customers reporting on engagement and lesson progress. Custom plans advertised on the website include cohort seats, shared libraries, single sign-on and onboarding support.
That gives Gupta and Neff two routes to revenue. The consumer subscription tests whether students will pay to replace idle scrolling. Institutional contracts test whether schools and employers will accept the feed as a delivery system for assigned material. The second route will require evidence that ScrollEd changes learning outcomes, rather than simply making course material easier to open.
AI study tools already have money and users
ScrollEd is entering a busy category. StudyFetch converts course material into tutoring sessions, quizzes and flashcards; StudyFetch says it raised an $11.5 million Series A led by Owl Ventures in June 2025. Oboe announced a $16 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz in December 2025 for its AI-generated courses. In February 2026, Quizlet introduced a conversational learning product that moves users from questions into flashcards and established study modes.
Those products compete on tutoring, course generation and study-material creation. ScrollEd's sharper distinction is navigational. Gupta and Neff are betting that format determines whether a student begins a lesson, and that a familiar feed can lower the activation energy required to study.
Bootstrapping gives the founders room to make that argument without an investor-funded growth target hanging over the first consumer release. It also leaves ScrollEd focused on a consumer launch, a lesson library, a source-checking workflow and institutional pilots at the same time.
The sideways swipe still needs a learning result
Research on AI education tools gives ScrollEd a useful warning. A 2026 review from Stanford's SCALE Initiative found that pedagogical guardrails matter. Tutoring systems that guide students with hints or structured reasoning have produced more promising results than general-purpose chatbots that simply supply answers. The review also found that rigorous causal evidence remains thin, especially in American classrooms and over longer periods.
ScrollEd is designed closer to a structured learning product than an open-ended chatbot. Its quizzes, source material and planned guided journeys could preserve some of the effort required for learning. A slick interface does not establish that outcome. ScrollEd will need to measure whether users remember concepts, finish assigned material and perform better after studying through the feed.
Gupta and Neff have chosen a product premise that accepts how people behave instead of scolding them for it. The founders are not waiting for students to put down their phones and rediscover long-form reading through discipline alone. They are moving the textbook onto the phone and adding a second swipe for depth.
Their challenge begins once the novelty wears off. ScrollEd must make the sideways swipe valuable enough that students choose it over the endless upward motion the rest of the internet has spent years perfecting.
