Sonic Fire Tech raises $15M to push acoustic suppression through fire codes
Former NASA engineer Geoff Bruder plans to spend the round on hiring and the tests needed to move infrasound from demos into regulated buildings.

Sonic Fire Tech, founded by Geoffrey "Geoff" Bruder and Michael Thomas, raised a $15 million round led by The O.H.I.O. Fund with participation from Khosla Ventures, TechCrunch reported Monday. The financing will fund hiring and the testing needed to move Sonic Fire Tech's waterless fire-suppression system into commercial kitchens, apartment buildings and other regulated properties.
Bruder's route to fire protection began with power systems for planetary missions. Before starting Sonic Fire Tech, Bruder worked at NASA's Glenn Research Center on thermoacoustic systems, including technology designed to turn heat into acoustic energy for a Venus lander. Thomas, a lawyer who had been exploring acoustic approaches to fighting wildfires, found Bruder's patents and contacted him on LinkedIn.
Their first prototype was assembled from a high-end subwoofer and parts bought from Home Depot and AutoZone. Bruder said in a December 2025 interview that it extinguished a fire from seven feet away before the speaker melted. The experiment established the premise behind Sonic Fire Tech: pressure waves could interrupt a flame from farther away than earlier subwoofer demonstrations, provided Bruder could build a much more efficient acoustic generator.
The round is buying a path through fire codes
Sonic Fire Tech has reached the stage where engineering demonstrations must become repeatable evidence for regulators, insurers and building officials. TechCrunch reported that a typical fire-protection approval process can take about three years. Bruder expects Sonic Fire Tech's process to be "significantly shorter," in part because repeated laboratory tests would not require crews to drain water or remove chemical suppressant between runs.
The formal hurdle is broader than receiving a single industry endorsement. NFPA 13D's equivalency provisions require technical documentation showing that an alternative system provides equivalent or superior protection. The authority having jurisdiction, usually a local building or fire official, then decides whether to approve the system for its intended use.
That makes the $15 million regulatory and testing capital. Sonic Fire Tech can sell the promise of clean suppression through controlled demonstrations, but replacing or supplementing sprinklers inside occupied buildings requires evidence across different fuels, room layouts, obstructions and reignition risks.
How Sonic Fire Tech moves sound through a building
Sonic Fire Tech's fixed system uses sensors to detect heat or flames and activates a sound generator connected to concealed PVC ducting. The generator sends low-frequency waves at roughly 20 Hz through ceiling outlets toward the fire. Sonic Fire Tech says the waves disrupt combustion by moving the air and oxygen around a flame faster than the fuel can sustain the reaction.
The approach removes the stored water tanks, pressurized chemical vessels and cleanup associated with conventional suppression. It also creates a different technical constraint: sound can knock down a flame without necessarily cooling the fuel or surrounding surfaces.
Bruder has acknowledged that limitation. In the December interview, he said a long-burning wood fire could reignite unless the acoustic system continued operating until the material cooled below its ignition temperature. In early lithium-ion battery tests, Bruder told TechCrunch, Sonic Fire Tech contained flames and sought to prevent cell-to-cell spread rather than extinguishing the underlying battery reaction.
Independent fire researchers have pressed Sonic Fire Tech for more extensive data. Ars Technica reported in May that specialists wanted full-scale testing across furniture, mattresses, cooking oil, electrical equipment, obstructed fuel and different ventilation conditions. Sonic Fire Tech provided Ars with a short summary of a third-party evaluation, which called for additional testing and optimization, rather than the complete report.
The new financing gives Bruder the resources to answer those questions with test results instead of another demonstration video.
Sonic Fire Tech is moving toward regulated customers
Bruder said in December 2025 that Sonic Fire Tech was initially concentrating on nonregulated spaces, California homeowners and utility demonstrations. That route let Sonic Fire Tech test its 500-watt acoustic generator while working toward applications that require formal equivalency with sprinkler standards.
The $15 million round pushes Sonic Fire Tech deeper into regulated interiors. Commercial kitchens offer an early target because grease and electrical fires can spread quickly, while water and chemical discharge can force extensive restoration. Homes, apartment buildings and data centers offer a larger opportunity if Sonic Fire Tech can prove performance across the wider range of fires found in occupied properties.
Insurance could become a second distribution gate. Sonic Fire Tech is discussing possible premium discounts with insurers, according to TechCrunch. A discount would give property owners a financial reason to install the system, particularly in retrofits where acoustic ducting must compete with the cost and familiarity of conventional sprinklers.
The round follows a $3.5 million seed financing announced in October 2025. Khosla Ventures, which co-led that earlier round with Third Sphere and AirAngels, returned for the new financing. The O.H.I.O. Fund's lead role keeps Bruder's next phase tied to Ohio, where Sonic Fire Tech has drawn on the Cleveland area's aerospace engineers, machine shops and manufacturing suppliers.
Bruder built Sonic Fire Tech around an unusual transfer of expertise: acoustic machinery developed for hostile planetary environments repurposed for kitchens, homes and industrial buildings. The physics got Sonic Fire Tech through the driveway experiment. The $15 million will determine whether the system can pass the tests that turn an invention into fire-protection infrastructure.
