Elon Musk (@elonmusk) used a company address to place settlement beyond Earth and artificial intelligence at the center of SpaceX's next phase, extending the rocket maker's mission beyond launch and satellite connectivity.

In a video posted on X on August 11th, SpaceX described reusable rockets and its space-based internet network as accomplishments already established. It named the next challenge as "making life multiplanetary and understanding the true nature of the universe."

That pairing captures the wider company Musk has assembled. SpaceX still depends on rockets and satellites, but its stated mission now also incorporates xAI, Grok and plans for computing infrastructure in orbit. The employee address gives Musk a way to present those operations as parts of one engineering program rather than a collection of capital-intensive businesses.

Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 and remains its chief executive, chief technical officer and chairman, according to the company's public offering materials filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Those documents say SpaceX acquired xAI in early 2026 and describe the AI developer as an integral part of the combined company.

The same filing connects Grok's scientific ambitions with Starship's planned transport capacity and Starlink's communications network. SpaceX told investors that it ultimately wants to build a lunar base, cities on other planets and AI infrastructure powered in space. Those remain company projections, with Starship's performance and economics determining how much of the plan can leave presentation slides.

Starship carries the plan

SpaceX says it has invested more than $15 billion in Starship, the fully reusable launch system intended to carry cargo and people to the Moon and Mars. The rocket also has a nearer commercial assignment: launching larger Starlink satellites at a rate Falcon 9 cannot match.

SpaceX's prospectus projected that one Starship mission could deploy as many as 60 V3 Starlink satellites. The company said that would place 20 times as much downlink capacity into orbit as a Falcon 9 launch. Those estimates depend on SpaceX reaching reliable, high-cadence Starship operations, a milestone the flight-test program is still pursuing.

The 13th Starship test flight on July 24th deployed operational Starlink satellites for the first time, according to reporting on the mission. Musk subsequently said SpaceX was targeting another Starship flight during August, with another batch of V3 satellites aboard, Space.com reported.

Starlink supplies the scale behind Musk's longer-range program. SpaceX reported approximately 10.3 million Starlink subscribers as of March 31st, up from 5 million a year earlier. It also reported roughly 9,600 broadband and mobile satellites in low Earth orbit across 164 countries, territories and other markets. Those figures came from SpaceX's securities filings.

A public-company mission statement

The employee update arrived one week after SpaceX's August 4th quarterly earnings call, its first since becoming publicly traded. SpaceX generated $7.81 billion in second-quarter revenue and recorded a $541 million net loss, Axios reported. Connectivity produced $4.29 billion of that revenue, while the division containing xAI and Grok generated $2.56 billion.

Those results explain the structure behind Musk's message. Starlink produces recurring connectivity revenue. Falcon generates launch revenue and maintains SpaceX's access to orbit. Starship is designed to lower deployment costs and carry heavier infrastructure. xAI creates another source of demand for computing capacity, including the orbital data centers SpaceX says it eventually wants to build.

Each part depends on the others working at industrial scale. Starship must move from experimental flights to repeatable operations. Starlink must keep adding enough capacity and customers to finance continued expansion. SpaceX must also show that combining rockets, satellite communications and AI produces economic advantages beyond shared ownership under Musk.

The address sets the standard Musk wants employees and investors to use. Reusable rockets and global satellite internet are the foundation. Starship, off-world settlements and AI-driven scientific discovery are the next test.
