Spotify launches Xirp to orchestrate coding agents without model lock-in

Spotify launched Xirp on August 10th, pitching the new agentic development environment as a control layer for engineering teams running AI coding agents across competing models, repositories and parallel work sessions.

Tyson Singer, Spotify's head of technology and platforms, said Spotify built Xirp after engineers moved from using one coding agent for one task to coordinating multiple agents across separate tools, branches and repositories. That shift increased code output, according to Singer, while also producing more rework, inconsistent results and token spending as agents repeatedly reconstructed context.

Xirp is Spotify's attempt to separate that context from the model provider. The product supports Claude Code, Gemini CLI and Codex, with each session operating inside its own Git worktree. Engineers can switch tools during a project while retaining the working state, and Spotify says teams can route work to self-hosted open-source models as well.

The architecture addresses a growing enterprise concern: coding-agent adoption can bind engineering workflows to whichever vendor stores the prompts, rules, skills and session history. Xirp keeps those materials in a shared environment, giving Spotify a position above the model layer rather than competing with the model developers themselves.

Spotify says thousands of its engineers have used Xirp across more than 36,000 sessions and that the environment can coordinate more than 50 sessions in parallel. Those figures are self-reported, and Spotify did not publish a measured reduction in engineering time or spending. The company attributed faster context switching and cost efficiencies to the internal rollout without specifying the period covered or the baseline used.

Extending Spotify's developer-tools business

Xirp also advances Spotify's push to sell the internal infrastructure it built while managing thousands of engineers and software components. Spotify created Backstage to map services, dependencies, ownership and technical documentation, then released the framework as an open-source project in 2020.

Spotify later built Portal, a hosted and managed version of Backstage for enterprise customers. Portal reached general availability on October 22nd, 2025, expanding a commercial developer-tools operation that began with paid Backstage plugins.

Xirp moves that product line into the daily execution of software work. When connected to Portal, each agent session can draw from an organization's software catalog, including component architecture, dependency graphs, ownership records and architectural decisions. Session transcripts and metadata then flow back into Portal so another engineer or agent can resume the work.

Spotify is also offering a Portal Workspace plugin that stores work items, sessions and documentation. The company says Xirp can turn coding-session history into updated documentation and place reusable rules, skills, plugins and Model Context Protocol configurations in a shared catalog.

That feedback loop is central to Spotify's sales pitch. Backstage organized institutional knowledge for human developers. Xirp applies the same catalog to agents, while capturing the agents' work as new organizational context. The product gives Spotify a way to make Portal increasingly useful as customers run more AI-generated work through it.

The company is distributing Xirp through a beta program that includes access to a Portal instance. The current offer asks customers to start with one team and one project, giving Spotify a contained path into engineering organizations before expanding across more repositories and agent sessions.

Xirp enters a market where model capabilities and prices can change faster than enterprise procurement cycles. Spotify's bet is that large engineering groups will pay for a persistent context and governance layer even as the underlying coding models remain interchangeable. Its strongest evidence comes from Spotify's own deployment, while broader adoption will depend on whether outside teams can connect their fragmented documentation and service catalogs without creating another system engineers must maintain.
