Unitree's numbers place its prototype beyond two documented human records. Test methods, endurance and a product plan will determine the engineering and commercial significance.

Wang Xingxing's Unitree Robotics previewed a new humanoid robot on August 17th that it says reached 12.66 meters per second and completed a 2-meter standing jump, two claimed marks that narrowly push robotic locomotion past documented human performance.

The machine, introduced under the name "Superman," reached a claimed top speed equivalent to 45.6 kilometers per hour, or 28.3 miles per hour. Unitree described the robot as having 0.85-meter legs and said it surpassed the standing-jump and running-speed records of humans.

The announcement extends the engineering thesis Wang has followed since graduate school: build the motors, drives, mechanical structure and control systems together, then use aggressive motion as the proof. Wang developed the XDog quadruped while pursuing his master's degree and founded Unitree in 2016 after videos of the machine drew attention, according to Unitree's account of its history.

A narrow speed advantage

Unitree's headline numbers clear the human benchmarks it selected, though the speed comparison depends on how the robot was measured.

World Athletics puts Usain Bolt's fastest documented 20-meter split at 12.42 meters per second during his 9.58-second 100-meter world record in 2009. Unitree's claimed 12.66-meter-per-second peak is 0.24 meters per second faster, a margin of about 1.9%.

Those figures are not necessarily equivalent. Bolt's number represents an average across the 60-to-80-meter section of a sanctioned race. Unitree described its figure as a top speed without publishing the distance, acceleration period, timing equipment, surface or number of successful trials. The promotional video establishes Unitree's claim, rather than an independently certified record.

The jump comparison is wider. Guinness World Records lists Christopher Spell's 1.70-meter jump in February 2021 as the men's standing-jump record. Unitree's claimed 2-meter result would clear that mark by 30 centimeters, or roughly 17.6%. The same testing questions apply, including how the starting posture and successful landing were defined.

Unitree pushes far beyond the H1

The preview represents a steep mechanical jump from Unitree's existing published humanoid specifications. Unitree lists a moving speed of 3.3 meters per second and potential mobility above 5 meters per second for its original H1 humanoid, which stands about 1.8 meters tall and uses joint units rated for up to 360 newton-meters of torque.

Unitree has not identified the new machine as an H1 successor or disclosed its weight, degrees of freedom, actuator design, battery, sensors or onboard compute. It is also unclear whether "Superman" is a product name, an internal project label or simply the title of the demonstration.

That distinction matters because Unitree has built attention through flips, combat demonstrations and coordinated performances while selling lower-cost robotic hardware to researchers and developers. Athletic control validates actuators, balance systems and reinforcement-learning policies. It does not establish whether a machine can perform useful work autonomously for hours, recover reliably from errors or operate safely around people.

Wang has drawn that line himself. He told Time in 2025 that advances in AI would be required for robots to complete tasks in unfamiliar environments without preprogramming. The Superman preview shows another large increase in physical capability. Unitree has yet to connect that speed to perception, manipulation or a commercial use case.

The machine could also face a closed route into the United States. On July 29th, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission moved to ban imports of new foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots, citing cybersecurity and supply-chain risks, according to the Associated Press. The measure directly targets the category in which Unitree competes.

For now, Superman is a performance preview with two precisely stated results and few of the specifications needed to assess a product. Unitree has demonstrated that its next robot can move quickly under controlled conditions. Repeatability, endurance and useful autonomy will determine whether the machine advances beyond the demo floor.
