Vernius says eight weeks in Ukraine yielded a 45-unit sale and $500M in LOIs

The YC S26 radar startup skipped its batch program, field-tested seeker hardware and is using wartime procurement speed to raise capital.

Arthur Nguyen-Cao (@Arthur_NC_), co-founder and CEO of Vernius Systems, said on August 24th that the defense startup went from an idea to field tests in Ukraine, secured $500M in letters of intent and sold 45 units to a special forces unit within eight weeks.

The work kept Vernius away from the programming for its entire Summer 2026 Y Combinator batch. "Some things you just can't build in SF," Nguyen-Cao wrote in a thread on X.

Nguyen-Cao arrived at Vernius with direct experience building for Ukrainian operators. His YC profile says he previously led 14 engineers at Defense Tech for Ukraine, developing FPV drone systems that were fielded by Ukrainian units. Before moving into defense, he co-founded Auctify, an AI smart-glasses startup that raised $250,000 and later pivoted into a calorie-tracking product.

Vernius was founded in 2026 with Hisham El-Halabi and Joseph Gonzalez. El-Halabi, Vernius' CTO, previously worked with Nguyen-Cao at Auctify and studied engineering science at the University of Toronto. Gonzalez, the startup's COO, worked at Sandia National Laboratories on secure communications for the U.S. Navy's Tomahawk fleet, according to his YC profile.

A cheaper seeker for cheap interceptors

Vernius builds radar seekers, the onboard sensors that allow interceptor drones or missiles to find and track targets. Nguyen-Cao said Vernius only makes the radar, leaving range, speed and payload limits to the airframe carrying it.

The immediate target is the widening cost gap in counter-drone defense. Ukraine and its allies need to stop large numbers of inexpensive attack drones without firing an interceptor that costs orders of magnitude more than its target. Interceptor drones can narrow that gap, though many still depend on pilots visually acquiring a target during the final approach. Darkness, smoke, fog and the speed of the incoming drone make that process unreliable.

Vernius says its seeker can receive a cue from a ground network, guide an interceptor toward a target beyond visual range and hand the final approach to a vision-based guidance system. The same hardware can send range and bearing data to a human pilot rather than controlling the aircraft autonomously.

The startup lists three radar products. Its 80-millimeter Archimedes 1A is a 24 GHz fixed-beam seeker for FPV interceptors, with a company-claimed detection range of more than one kilometer against a Shahed-class radar signature. A larger Archimedes 1B is designed for ground vehicles and aerial motherships. Vernius also lists Barca 1, a longer-range seeker intended for interceptor missiles.

Those specifications remain company claims. The Ukraine deployment matters because it moves Vernius beyond a laboratory demonstration and into testing with operators facing live threats. Vernius says it works directly with frontline units and airframe partners from the first prototype through live-fire trials.

The $500M number needs context

Nguyen-Cao's $500M figure covers letters of intent, which indicate prospective demand rather than booked revenue. LOIs are commonly non-binding and can represent projected purchases over several years. They are useful evidence that buyers are engaging with Vernius, though they do not carry the weight of signed procurement contracts or completed deliveries.

The 45-unit sale is the firmer commercial milestone. It indicates that at least one military customer moved beyond evaluation during the eight-week sprint described by Nguyen-Cao. Vernius has not attached a revenue figure to that sale.

Ukraine has become a compressed development environment for defense startups because engineers can receive feedback from operators, alter hardware and return it for testing on timelines that conventional military procurement rarely permits. Defense Tech for Ukraine, where Nguyen-Cao previously worked, describes its role as connecting manufacturers and engineers with frontline testers to speed development and adoption.

That pace is the core of Vernius' pitch. Its YC page says traditional radar seekers can require large engineering teams and years of development, while Vernius is attempting to automate parts of the design process and produce working systems in weeks. The comparison is supplied by Vernius, though its eight-week account offers an early example of the development cycle it is selling.

The timing also supports Vernius' next financing push. Nguyen-Cao said in replies to the thread that Vernius is raising capital. The startup is pairing YC's investor network with a battlefield-tested sales story: skip the batch, ship hardware and return with procurement interest that can be shown to investors. The $500M pipeline will be judged by how much converts into binding orders. The 45-unit sale is where that conversion has started.
