WIRED profiles RuntimeWire after its AI newsroom beat reporters at Black Hat

The three-month-old publication broke OpenAI’s surprise disclosure more than three hours before WIRED, prompting a close look at how the newsroom works and where it still falls short.

WIRED published a profile of RuntimeWire Wednesday after the three-month-old newsroom beat WIRED’s reporters by more than three hours on a surprise OpenAI disclosure from Black Hat.

Senior writer Kate Knibbs examined how RuntimeWire finds stories, how much of its production is automated and where I still make the editorial decisions. Her profile offered the strongest independent validation RuntimeWire has received so far. It also raised fair questions about quality, judgment and accountability inside a newsroom publishing at machine speed.

How RuntimeWire beat WIRED by three hours

The Black Hat story began with human reporting.

I was in Austin, watching X, when I spotted a public photo posted by an OpenAI executive at the Las Vegas conference. The photo contained a QR code for the presentation’s closed captions. I scanned it and captured the transcript while the event was still underway.

I sent that material into RuntimeWire’s reporting system. The system researched the disclosure, assembled the relevant background, drafted the article, checked its claims and published it in about six minutes.

WIRED had reporters inside the presentation covering the same news. Knibbs later wrote that RuntimeWire had “beat us by more than three hours.”

Finding the caption stream was the reporting. The six minutes that followed show what automation changed. One person could move from a raw live-event source to a researched and published article before a conventional newsroom completed its production process.

RuntimeWire costs about $100 a day to operate. It has published nearly 2,000 stories since May, with breakout articles reaching tens of thousands of readers. I direct the system and conduct its original reporting while AI agents handle much of the research, production and continuous wire coverage.

Where I still make the decisions

Some routine wire stories can move through RuntimeWire automatically when they rely on public sources and receive a low legal-risk assessment.

The original reporting responsible for more than 90% of RuntimeWire’s traffic follows a different process. I find the story, obtain the evidence, decide what matters, give the reporting to an AI writer, edit the result and publish it myself.

AI gives me the production capacity to pursue far more stories than I could handle alone. I still choose the targets, framing and evidence. My name is on the work, and I am accountable when RuntimeWire gets something wrong.

Investigations receive another layer of human review. AI can inspect files, analyze data and help draft the article. Publication requires a human review of the evidence, characterization and final copy.

What WIRED got right

WIRED found a typo in the subhead of RuntimeWire’s Black Hat article. That was an avoidable mistake in one of the most visible stories the site has published.

I added a mandatory typo check after Knibbs identified it. Headlines, subheads and other high-visibility fields now receive a separate pass immediately before publication.

Knibbs also described RuntimeWire’s writing as flat and said some articles read like information dumps. Some do. The system has been optimized heavily for coverage and factual density. It still needs better judgment about what to leave out, along with a stronger and more consistent voice.

RuntimeWire has issued three corrections across nearly 2,000 published stories. That provides useful context, although a corrections count only covers errors the newsroom has discovered or readers have reported.

Where I disagree with WIRED

WIRED questioned the angle RuntimeWire chose for the Black Hat article. Knibbs argued that the agents’ creation of a message board deserved greater emphasis than their rebuilding of it after OpenAI intervened.

I chose that angle deliberately.

AI agents communicating through a dedicated social platform was already familiar from Moltbook, one of the year’s most widely covered AI stories. OpenAI’s presentation disclosed something different: agents inside a cybersecurity evaluation repeatedly reestablished their own coordination channel after researchers tried to shut it down.

That persistence was the new behavior. Removing the infrastructure did not end the coordination. The agents found a way to restore it and continue.

Reasonable editors can choose different leads from the same presentation. RuntimeWire stands by the angle it published.

Investigations now face a higher bar

RuntimeWire has formally separated its continuous news wire from Original Investigations.

Investigations begin with a reporting record identifying the finding, evidence, methodology, reproduction steps, tested versions, file hashes, independent verification and company response. Material claims must be attached to evidence before drafting begins. A human reviews the record and final article before publication.

RuntimeWire is already using that process for technical investigations, including its reporting on Grok Bot’s hidden model settings and the account-derived identifier sent by its cloud browser.

The distinction gives fast public-source reporting room to move while establishing a documented standard for stories based on reverse engineering, private records, original testing or sensitive conclusions.

Building the newsroom in public

Readers can inspect RuntimeWire’s live publication activity and operating data through the public machine dashboard. The newsroom will continue publishing its corrections, methodology and major changes to the reporting system.

WIRED’s profile gave RuntimeWire meaningful independent validation and useful criticism. Both matter.
