X appears to be testing an optional "X Numbers" feature that would give XChat users a private code for controlling who can message or call them, adding a phone-number-like access layer to a service marketed around eliminating phone-number exchanges.

Independent X feature tester @blankspeaker demonstrated the control in a video posted on August 28th. According to the tester, enabling X Numbers would prevent unknown accounts from sending messages or placing calls unless they know the recipient's assigned number. Mutual follows and existing XChat contacts would remain able to make contact without it.

The distinction matters because an X handle is public by design. An X Number would function as a second address that a user can distribute selectively, allowing people outside an established social graph to initiate a conversation without opening the account to every stranger who can find its profile.

That is a familiar property of phone numbers, transplanted into X's account system without involving a carrier or exposing a user's actual mobile number. XChat's App Store listing currently sells the opposite-sounding benefit: users can sign in with an X account, bring their existing network and skip phone-number swaps. X Numbers would preserve that pitch technically while recreating the useful gatekeeping function that phone numbers provide.

A new route through XChat's contact controls

X's current Chat documentation ties encrypted messaging eligibility to existing relationships. A recipient generally needs to follow or subscribe to the sender, have messaged the sender before, have accepted an earlier encrypted message, or share membership in the same Premium Business or Premium Organization.

Accounts can separately accept unencrypted message requests from strangers, subject to recipient settings and daily request limits based on the sender's subscription tier. X says those requests become encrypted after acceptance. Grok classifies incoming requests into priority and hidden inboxes.

X Numbers appears designed to add a narrower option between a closed inbox and broadly accepting requests. A creator, executive or operator could share an X Number with customers, conference attendees or prospective contacts while withholding permission from everyone else. The source shows the number governing calls as well as messages, making it an access credential for synchronous communication rather than another profile identifier.

X's existing calling rules allow users to control who can call them. The default includes followed accounts, address-book contacts when access has been granted, and members of the same Premium Business or Premium Organization. X also says a user must previously have sent a direct message before another account can call them. X Numbers would create a different path for an unknown account when the recipient has intentionally supplied the code.

The number becomes the privacy boundary

The feature's value will depend on how X handles compromised or over-shared numbers. Users will need a practical way to regenerate a number, revoke an old one and identify which contact received which credential. A single permanent code would eventually behave like a leaked phone number: once copied into a public post, database or group chat, it would stop filtering much of anything.

Number length and discoverability will matter as well. Short or sequential identifiers could be guessed or tested automatically unless X applies strict rate limits. Longer randomized codes would offer a stronger barrier, although they would be harder to exchange verbally or print on a business card. The demonstration does not establish the final format.

The tester described X Numbers as upcoming, and X's public documentation currently explains the existing relationship and request controls. The test nonetheless shows where XChat is headed. X is building a second, privately distributed identity layer on top of its public account graph, giving users a way to remain reachable without turning every visible profile into an open phone line.
