Yardi buys Sidero Labs as Talos Linux adds a native hypervisor

Sidero president Steve Francis says the acquisition will support Talos Linux's move into virtual machines and standalone containers; an alpha release is due at TalosCon in October, with general availability planned for December.

Sidero Labs president Steve Francis is taking the Kubernetes infrastructure developer into Yardi Systems, with the new owner providing the financial backing and resources to extend Talos Linux beyond Kubernetes.

The companies announced the acquisition on September 14th alongside Talos Hypervisor, according to Sidero's release. The alpha release and a public demonstration are scheduled for October 15th and 16th at TalosCon in Amsterdam. Sidero plans general availability in December 2026. The acquisition price, transaction structure and treatment of Sidero's previous investors were not disclosed.

Goleta, California-based Sidero was founded in 2019 as Talos Systems. Its founding group included Talos creator Andrew Rynhard, infrastructure specialist Brad Beam and Timothy Gerla, who had previously co-founded Ansible and served as its chief technology officer. A 2024 funding announcement identified Rynhard as Sidero's founder and chief technology officer at the time.

Francis has built infrastructure software through several generations of enterprise computing. He founded monitoring developer LogicMonitor after holding data center and infrastructure roles involving Citrix Online, the University of California and National Geographic. According to a Modern CTO interview, Francis was an early Sidero investor and later joined the company. The same interview says Rynhard had worked for Francis at LogicMonitor before founding Sidero.

Talos grew out of Sidero's experience running Kubernetes on conventional Linux systems. Its answer was to remove familiar administration surfaces instead of adding another automation layer around them. Talos has no SSH server, interactive shell or package manager. Operators declare the desired machine state through an API, while system components are read-only and upgrades are applied declaratively.

Yardi buys a larger roadmap

Yardi, a property-management software developer with more than 10,000 employees, is far removed from the usual Kubernetes tooling buyer. The acquisition gives Sidero the financial backing and resources of an established enterprise software company, according to the announcement, while preserving Talos's open-source foundation.

Francis tied the new product to the operating model Sidero already uses for Kubernetes. "By bringing native hypervisor capabilities into Talos Linux, we extend the core Talos principles - immutability, minimal attack surface and declarative management that eliminates drift - to VM workloads," he said in the acquisition and product announcement.

Yardi gives Sidero a larger enterprise owner while the acquisition announcement says Talos will retain its open-source foundation. The public Talos repository remains under the MPL-2.0 license. The companies did not say whether Sidero will operate as an independent subsidiary or how product decisions will be divided after the purchase.

Yardi founder Anant Yardi has spent four decades building the enterprise software group. He began developing Yardi's first property-management product for the Apple II in 1984 after working in systems development at Burroughs. In the acquisition release, he said Yardi intends to preserve Talos's security, simplicity and openness while funding work across Kubernetes, containers, virtual machines and GPU workloads.

Sidero had already made a pointed engineering tradeoff before the deal. On August 19th, less than a month before the acquisition announcement, the company ended its own development and commercial support for the Talos Linux Cluster API providers. Sidero said those projects consumed disproportionate engineering time relative to their usage and revenue. Maintenance moved to the community, while Sidero directed engineering investment toward Omni and its Terraform provider.

The acquisition announcement does not connect that earlier decision to Yardi or claim that new headcount funded the change. It does, however, pair Yardi's promised resources with a considerably wider assignment for Talos: supporting Kubernetes clusters, standalone containers, virtual machines and GPU workloads through one open platform.

From a Kubernetes OS to an infrastructure OS

Talos Hypervisor extends the operating system's immutable, API-managed model to virtual machines. Sidero says administrators will be able to operate VMs without deploying Kubernetes or learning KubeVirt, while platform teams can manage machines through Talos and its commercial Omni fleet-management product.

The release also introduces direct container scheduling without Kubernetes. Sidero is targeting single-node sites such as factory gateways, retail locations and cell sites, where the resources and operational work required by a Kubernetes cluster may exceed its value. Those containers can still be managed through Omni alongside larger Kubernetes fleets and virtualized workloads.

Sidero says Talos Hypervisor will be fully open source. The existing Talos Linux repository has more than 10,200 GitHub stars, and Sidero reports 330 contributors. That gives the company an established pool of users and developers from which to recruit alpha testers. The architecture carries forward Talos controls including read-only system components, signed releases, declarative upgrades and an API in place of manual server access.

Talos Linux itself is free and open source. Sidero's pricing FAQ says Omni uses node-based pricing with a 10-node minimum, although the company has not disclosed pricing for the hypervisor capabilities.

Sidero is entering a crowded VMware replacement market after years of licensing turbulence pushed enterprises to reassess their virtualization estates. Harvester runs KVM and KubeVirt on top of Kubernetes, using the Kubernetes API across virtual machines and containers. Platform9 markets live migration, high availability and automated VMware migration alongside built-in Kubernetes. Other alternatives include Proxmox VE, OpenShift Virtualization, XCP-ng and VergeIO.

Sidero is making a narrower architectural argument. Virtualization administrators should be able to operate VMs without first adopting Kubernetes, while edge operators should be able to run a containerized application without installing a cluster. Talos supplies the common operating layer, and Kubernetes remains one available workload environment.

The alpha will need to fill in the operational details behind that pitch. Sidero's announcement does not specify supported guest operating systems, storage and networking designs, live-migration capabilities, VMware import tooling, performance results or pricing. Those are central purchasing criteria for enterprises moving established VM estates, and several rivals already sell products around them.

What Yardi is buying

Sidero announced a $4 million investment in October 2024, led by Hiro Capital with participation from the Sony Innovation Fund. At the time, Sidero said its products were trusted by hundreds of companies and helped manage tens of thousands of clusters. It has not published revenue, growth figures or current customer counts alongside the Yardi deal.

The purchase gives Yardi an open-source infrastructure operating system with an existing developer community and gives Sidero more resources for a demanding product expansion. December's planned general availability will test whether Talos can translate its stripped-down operating model into the migration, storage, networking and availability features expected of a production virtualization platform.

Francis now has a larger enterprise owner behind the project. His harder assignment is widening Talos beyond the Kubernetes problem that created it without rebuilding the administrative complexity Sidero removed from Linux in the first place.
