Zoox adds Las Vegas airport rides, where robotaxis meet actual luggage
Jesse Levinson's purpose-built vehicles now serve both LAS terminals, less than a month after Zoox began charging fares.

Airport rides combine high demand with operational complexity. Zoox's launch tests whether Jesse Levinson's integrated vehicle-and-service model can turn a decade of engineering into a repeatable commercial business before better-funded fleets crowd Las Vegas.

Zoox (@zoox) extended its paid robotaxi service to Harry Reid International Airport on September 3rd, putting co-founder Jesse Levinson (@jesselevinson)'s purpose-built vehicle on one of the routes that will determine whether autonomous ride-hailing can graduate from demonstration to transportation.
Riders can request trips between Zoox's Las Vegas service area and both airport terminals through the Zoox app. The launch came less than a month after Zoox began charging for rides on August 10th, following a federal exemption that allowed commercial use of vehicles without steering wheels or pedals.
Forbes focused on the operational challenge underneath the expansion. Airports force robotaxi operators to solve terminal selection, luggage storage, congested pickup zones and passenger wayfinding in a single trip. A vehicle that performs well on the Strip can still fail the customer if it drops a traveler at the wrong terminal or proves difficult to find after a flight.
For Levinson, the airport route is a practical test of the architecture he has pursued since co-founding Zoox in 2014. While most autonomous-driving developers began by installing sensors and software on existing cars, Zoox designed the vehicle, autonomy system and ride-hailing service together. The result has no conventional front or rear, uses four-wheel steering and seats passengers face-to-face inside a symmetrical cabin.
The airport becomes part of the product
Zoox's airport instructions ask departing passengers to enter their airline when booking. Zoox then selects the terminal. Terminal 1 drop-offs take place at the departures and ticketing level, while Terminal 3 passengers are dropped on Level 0 and continue upstairs to departures.
Arriving passengers have designated pickup zones. At Terminal 1, riders follow signs below baggage claim to Level 0 and cross toward the E Gates area. Terminal 3 pickups take place on Level 0 near Door 55. Zoox says the trip to the airport can take 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the starting point.
Luggage goes on the cabin floor rather than in a trunk. Zoox says there is space for at least one piece per rider, with bags placed so they remain stationary and do not rise beyond 28 inches from the floor. That constraint turns the unusual cabin into part of the airport operating model: face-to-face seating leaves open floor space, though travelers must handle and secure their own bags.
Levinson's ground-up bet reaches commercial service
Levinson arrived at Zoox after years of autonomous-driving research at Stanford. He earned a computer science Ph.D. there and developed algorithms for Stanford's winning vehicle in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. He had previously graduated from Princeton and later co-created Pro HDR, a smartphone photography app purchased more than one million times.
That research background shaped Zoox's decision to treat the robotaxi as a complete system rather than an autonomous-driving package fitted to a consumer vehicle. Levinson and co-founder Tim Kentley-Klay started Zoox with the premise that removing the human driver should change the physical design of the vehicle itself.
Aicha Evans, who became CEO in 2019 after 12 years at Intel, has overseen the long transition from that engineering thesis to a fare-generating service. Evans previously served as Intel's chief strategy officer and led wireless and communications operations involving thousands of engineers. Zoox's current leadership page lists Evans as CEO and Levinson as co-founder and chief technology officer.
Amazon agreed to acquire Zoox in 2020 for about $1.2 billion, according to Axios. Zoox continued as a separately operated subsidiary with Evans and Levinson in charge. The deal gave Zoox a parent capable of financing a project whose cost grows with every new vehicle, depot and city. Levinson recently told Axios that scaling the technology would require "double-digit billions."
The airport service begins to put that spending against a repeatable commercial route. Zoox previously carried riders free of charge, including after opening its Las Vegas service to the public on September 10th, 2025. Federal regulators granted a separate commercial exemption on July 30th, 2026, covering eight motor-vehicle safety standards and permitting up to 2,500 vehicles per year for two years. Zoox began paid Las Vegas rides on August 10th.
Las Vegas will not stay a one-robotaxi town
Zoox enters the airport before a wave of newly permitted competitors. Nevada regulators approved commercial robotaxi permits for Tesla, Uber and Waymo in Clark County on August 20th. The authorizations set ceilings totaling 8,000 vehicles over the following year, although representatives acknowledged that actual deployments could be much smaller. Zoox already held a permit covering 100 robotaxis, according to TechCrunch.
Uber also plans to offer Zoox vehicles through its own app in Las Vegas. That arrangement could eventually give Zoox access to Uber's customer base while letting Zoox preserve its own app and direct service. It also creates an unusual competitive overlap: Uber has permission to operate robotaxis supplied by partners including Zoox and Motional, while Zoox is building a consumer relationship of its own.
The harder work arrives with volume. Airport loops concentrate taxis, buses, pedestrians, luggage carts and drivers making last-second lane changes. Zoox also has to show that its autonomy system can handle abnormal conditions as reliably as routine traffic. In July, Zoox recalled 105 robotaxis after one entered a smoke-covered fire scene, then issued a software fix.
Levinson's design now has a route where its differences can earn their keep. Airline-aware terminal selection, a cabin built around passengers and pickup zones near baggage claim offer clear benefits. The next measure is whether Zoox can deliver those benefits repeatedly as Las Vegas fills with competing autonomous fleets.
