Chase Weir, the founder and CEO of Distributed Sun, launched trutility on August 18 to develop, own and operate battery storage, community solar, distributed generation and microgrids. The structure puts assets accumulated across Weir's energy businesses into a platform designed to hold projects after development, rather than selling them once construction risk has cleared.

Distributed Sun is trutility's anchor investor, according to the launch announcement. What the release describes is an asset and intellectual-property contribution, rather than a conventional cash financing. Distributed Sun is contributing a gigawatt-scale front-of-meter development portfolio, while its trucurrent subsidiary is bringing behind-the-meter capabilities. Trutility says it owns the contributed assets, customer relationships and operating system.

That distinction matters because the announcement groups more than $1 billion in historical capital investment around the new platform without identifying how much money went into trutility itself. Trutility did not disclose a round size, valuation, ownership split or outside investor. The $1 billion figure refers to the broader history of Distributed Sun and trucurrent assets and projects.

Weir has spent nearly two decades building the pieces he is now placing under one roof. According to his company biography, he founded the Earthshot Foundation in 2008, established Distributed Sun in 2009, formed truSolar in 2012, launched beEdison in 2014 and incubated trucurrent in 2022. The trutility launch release describes later milestones: truSolar as a 2014 risk-and-readiness standard established with S&P Global and DuPont, and beEdison as a 2015 Bloomberg FiRe award-winning platform. Weir holds a management degree from the University of North Carolina and received interdisciplinary honors from the University of Memphis.

Trutility is the latest version of a thesis Weir has pursued through those ventures: electricity becomes more valuable when an operator can control where it is delivered, when it is available and how the underlying asset is financed. "The kilowatt-hour is the base currency of the U.S. economy," Weir said in the announcement.

From project development to permanent ownership

Distributed-energy developers commonly make money by finding sites, securing permits and interconnection rights, assembling financing and selling projects to long-term owners. Trutility plans to retain projects through operation, giving Weir's organization access to recurring cash flows and any appreciation that follows commercial operation.

The initial portfolio includes battery storage measured at gigawatt-hour scale, community solar across multiple states and operating microgrids, according to Distributed Sun. The announcement says trutility starts with 24 front-of-meter battery-storage sites and expects that count to double during 2026. Its distributed portfolios cover 14 utility rate territories.

Those figures describe a mix of operating and development assets, and trutility has not separated contracted capacity from projects still moving through development. Distributed Sun says its wider organization has operated across 17 states and served more than 30,000 customers across more than 20 utilities since 2010. Trucurrent separately says it has developed, owned or operated more than 285 MW of distributed-energy assets.

Executive Chair Jeff Weiss, who co-founded Distributed Sun with Weir, said Distributed Sun has generated an average 9.2 times multiple on invested capital from development assets since 2019 and a 14.3% average levered return on operating assets since formation. Distributed Sun also says its first sunONE portfolio returned 103% of at-risk equity within 15 months and produced a 34% internal rate of return.

Distributed Sun reports those historical returns; trutility has no reported results from its own portfolio. They explain the strategy behind the launch: Weir and Weiss want to preserve more of the economics inside an asset-owning platform instead of repeatedly rebuilding and selling project portfolios.

The approach also extends a restructuring that began two years ago. In August 2024, Distributed Sun spun out trucurrent with $37.5 million in working capital to develop microgrids and other behind-the-meter systems for large commercial customers. That capital was announced for trucurrent and should not be treated as funding for trutility.

The AI label has infrastructure underneath it

Trutility describes its operating system as "AI-native at formation." The software is supposed to combine site data, energy policy, project costs, construction schedules and underwriting assumptions, then use agents to automate parts of project development. Distributed Sun claims those agents can reduce work that previously required 30 days to a matter of hours.

The claim remains company-supplied. The launch materials do not identify the models, software architecture, training data or benchmark methodology behind that reduction. Trutility's immediate value therefore rests on the assets and operating history being contributed by Distributed Sun and trucurrent. The automation layer has to prove that it can move physical projects through permitting, financing and interconnection faster, where mistakes are measured in months and capital costs rather than chatbot response quality.

Weir has credible history in the data side of energy underwriting. Distributed Sun helped establish truSolar as a risk and project-readiness framework with S&P Global and DuPont, then built beEdison to manage distributed-energy project development and finance. Trutility is applying that work to a broader operating platform with balance-sheet ownership.

Power queues create the opening

The timing follows a sharp increase in demand from data centers, electric fleets and industrial customers whose expansion plans can move faster than utility infrastructure. The International Energy Agency reported that data-center electricity demand rose 17% in 2025, while grid connections and supplies of transformers, turbines and other equipment remained constrained. The agency expects global data-center electricity consumption to double by 2030.

Battery deployment is rising alongside that demand. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said developers planned to add 24 GW of utility-scale battery storage in 2026, up from a record 15 GW installed in 2025. Trutility is entering a crowded market, but the volume of planned infrastructure leaves room for operators that can connect projects and loads faster.

Distributed Sun points to an unnamed EV fleet-charging microgrid connected through PG&E's Flex Connect program as evidence of that capability. The release says the project was energized four months after groundbreaking, two years earlier than a conventional interconnection route. Flexible connection programs allow utilities to vary import or export limits based on available grid capacity, letting controllable loads and distributed resources connect while larger upgrades remain pending. The project location, capacity and customer were not identified, so the speed claim remains attributable to Distributed Sun.
