DFRobot opens $229 seeMote Cap preorders for Vision Pro tool tracking

DFRobot's mountable 6DoF module attaches to existing tools; the company says first orders will ship in late September.

Why it matters

Apple has opened Vision Pro tracking to third-party hardware. DFRobot is testing whether a $229 module can turn that API into practical training and industrial software.

Ricky Ye's DFRobot opened preorders on September 14th for seeMote Cap, a $229 module that lets Apple Vision Pro applications track screwdrivers, lab instruments and other physical tools in six degrees of freedom.

DFRobot said in an announcement distributed by PR Newswire that first orders would ship in late September. DFRobot says the module gives visionOS developers a way to prototype spatial applications without building a custom tracked controller.

Ye, who holds a PhD in robotics engineering from the University of Nottingham, founded DFRobot in 2008. DFRobot grew out of a local maker community and now sells open-source development boards, sensors, robotics components and education kits.

seeMote Cap extends that component business into spatial computing. DFRobot is selling the tracking layer so visionOS developers can work on the application instead of designing a custom controller, its electronics and the corresponding software stack.

Keep the drill, add the tracking

The module attaches to physical tools and objects and sends their position, orientation and movement into visionOS applications. In its preorder announcement, DFRobot says seeMote Cap supports Apple's Spatial Accessory API; Apple's visionOS 27 developer presentation includes the device among accessories built for Apple Vision Pro.

The distinction from a conventional controller is the point. A training application can preserve the shape, weight and grip of the instrument a worker already uses, while seeMote Cap sends its position and orientation into visionOS. Developers decide how those movements map to instructions, validation steps or feedback inside an application.

Chunxiao Liu, a DFRobot product manager, reduced the pitch to five words in the announcement: "Keep the tool, add spatial tracking."

DFRobot demonstrated seeMote Cap on an orthopedic training drill inside a non-clinical simulation. DFRobot also lists maintenance, assembly, laboratory education and vocational training among the intended uses. The release limits its medical examples to non-clinical training and simulation.

The developer wiki provides configuration resources, a USDZ model, setup instructions and sample application code. DFRobot also says it supports Swift development, giving teams a reference implementation before they build their own tool-aware workflows.

Apple created the opening

DFRobot introduced seeMote Cap and a handheld sibling called seeMote Cube on June 8th. Apple's subsequent developer presentation put DFRobot inside a broader attempt to expand Vision Pro input beyond eye tracking, hand gestures and standard game controllers.

In its WWDC 2026 presentation, Apple described spatial accessories that communicate with Vision Pro and use visible LED patterns for tracking. Apple named DFRobot and embedded-hardware developer MIKROE as suppliers preparing off-the-shelf reference hardware. Apple also demonstrated seeMote Cap mounted on a flashlight, with the accessory's movement controlling a virtual beam.

That support matters because DFRobot does not have to persuade developers to adopt a proprietary tracking system. Apple supplies the operating-system framework and Vision Pro performs the optical tracking. DFRobot supplies hardware that can be mounted to an existing object and recognized by applications built around Apple's API.

DFRobot is not alone in that opening. MIKROE introduced its Spatial Anchor S1 and R1 on June 15th. The modules are Apple Vision Pro-compatible 6DoF accessories designed to mount to handheld tools, simulators and industrial equipment.

DFRobot's bet centers on a mountable module with a $229 entry price. DFRobot is packaging a specialized hardware layer into a component developers can use without designing their own tracked controller.

The preorder is still a developer bet

DFRobot's published materials describe the module's stated tracking capabilities and developer support. They do not quantify tracking error, usable battery life or end-to-end latency for seeMote Cap. Application performance will also depend on mounting, tool geometry and software implementation.

DFRobot has built a substantial catalog around this kind of experimentation. On its company history page, DFRobot says it employs more than 300 people, operates a 130,000-square-foot facility and has designed and developed more than 2,000 products spanning development boards, sensors, robotics platforms and education kits. Those self-reported figures do not reveal demand for seeMote Cap, but they show why DFRobot can pursue a specialized accessory before spatial tool tracking becomes a large category.

At $229, seeMote Cap gives developers a defined price point for testing whether spatial tracking has useful applications. The harder work begins after delivery: developers still have to prove that tracking a real tool produces better training, inspection or teaching software than a headset demonstration.
