Joby completes 3,199-mile autonomous flight with a converted Cessna

Joby Aviation, led by founder JoeBen Bevirt, said Friday that a converted Cessna Caravan equipped with its autonomy system flew 3,199 miles across the United States without its onboard safety pilot touching the controls.
The aircraft autonomously taxied, took off, navigated, rerouted and landed on its way from Concord, California, to Dare County Regional Airport near North Carolina's Outer Banks, according to Joby's September 18th announcement. Remote supervisors operated from Joby's California headquarters and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, at times sitting as far as 2,323 miles from the aircraft. A safety pilot remained aboard for regulatory compliance.
TechCrunch reported that Joby plans to market the system for conventional regional aircraft, with freight and defense among the first prospective uses. The test gives Bevirt a second aviation business to build while Joby continues the slower work of certifying, manufacturing and operating its electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft.
Bevirt has spent his career moving between robotics, consumer hardware and electric propulsion. He co-founded laboratory automation company Velocity11 in 1999, then founded the consumer-products business behind the Gorillapod flexible tripod in 2005. Joby's 2026 proxy filing lists him as founder, CEO and chief architect, with mechanical engineering degrees from the University of California, Davis, and Stanford.
He founded Joby in 2009 around the idea that electric propulsion could make everyday flight quieter and cheaper. Friday's flight widens that thesis: Joby can sell autonomy into aircraft and missions that do not depend on the range, charging network or certification schedule of its electric air taxi.
The airframe is the strategy
The aircraft was a Cessna Caravan, rather than Joby's passenger-carrying eVTOL. That distinction defines what Friday's test proved.
Joby demonstrated long-distance autonomous operations on a conventional aircraft, including integration at busy airports and rerouting around severe weather, according to Joby. The flight did not demonstrate autonomous passenger service, the battery range of Joby's electric aircraft or readiness for pilotless urban operations. No paying passengers were involved.
A conventional airframe gives Joby a route into freight, medical supply transport, disaster response and military logistics without waiting for its air taxi to cover every regulatory and operational requirement attached to passenger service. The Caravan also gives engineers an established aircraft on which to develop perception, flight planning, ground supervision and automated landing systems.
The flight crossed Phoenix and Fort Worth before reaching Shaw Air Force Base and the Outer Banks. Joby said the aircraft handled high-density airport traffic and weather-driven route changes without the safety pilot taking over. The eastbound trip formed part of Joby's month-long Electric Skies tour, with a westbound route planned through cities including Raleigh, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City and Portland.
Joby's Xwing purchase reaches across the country
Much of the technology came into Joby through its 2024 acquisition of Xwing's autonomy division. Xwing had developed its Superpilot system around the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and had completed 250 autonomous flights and more than 500 automated landings when Joby bought the assets with stock. The terms were not disclosed.
Joby now says the autonomy program has completed more than 400 flights and logged 800 automated flight hours across controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Those figures remain company-reported, but the transcontinental route moved the system beyond a contained demonstration. Joby also put the aircraft through military exercises and supervised flights from distant ground stations.
The U.S. Air Force has supported the work through a $17 million AFWERX contract, according to TechCrunch. Defense logistics offer an obvious early use: cargo missions can tolerate operating models and aircraft configurations that would be difficult to introduce first in a passenger network.
"Autonomy has an important role to play in the future of flight," Bevirt said in Friday's announcement. He tied the technology to remote communities, disaster relief, military operations and missions that would otherwise put pilots at risk.
That framing gives Joby room to pursue government and commercial customers with the same core software. It also reduces the risk of tying the entire autonomy program to Joby's own aircraft production schedule.
A defense business takes shape beside the air taxi
The flight followed Joby's August agreement to buy Resonant Sciences for approximately $500 million. As RuntimeWire reported when the deal was announced, Resonant will become Joby's dedicated defense business upon closing. Joby plans to consolidate its autonomy, turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft projects there, while its commercial aviation organization remains focused on certifying, manufacturing and commercializing the electric air taxi. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027.
Resonant Sciences has radio-frequency, sensing and mission-systems capabilities, classified infrastructure, established production operations and relationships with U.S. government customers. If the transaction closes, the proposed combination would pair those capabilities with Joby's Xwing-derived autonomy technology and give Joby a broader defense offering than an electric aircraft program alone.
Joby has the capital to run those programs in parallel, although aircraft development continues to consume cash. Joby Aviation reported $2.3 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities as of June 30th. Research and development expenses reached $194.7 million in the second quarter, while Joby had five electric air taxis flying and 12 more in production.
The transcontinental flight does not settle the certification path for autonomous freight or defense operations. Commercial deployment still depends on regulatory approval of the autonomy system, operating rules for remote supervision, aircraft integration and workable economics. The safety pilot aboard Friday's flight is a reminder that operational autonomy and permission to operate without a pilot are separate milestones.
Bevirt now has a credible demonstration that the autonomy technology Joby acquired can travel across the national airspace, handle multiple airports and run under supervision from thousands of miles away. The next test is commercial: turning a coast-to-coast engineering result into aircraft programs that customers can deploy while Joby's electric air taxi continues its own route through certification.
