Joseph Borna launches ClassSwap to match students when college courses fill
The 17-year-old UCLA student is starting with four named campuses, where the product needs local density before matching becomes useful.

Joseph Borna, a 17-year-old UCLA student completing his final coursework, launched ClassSwap on September 15th, according to a ClassSwap release distributed by PR Newswire. The product connects students who hold a course or section with classmates trying to get into it, then leaves any enrollment change to the school's registration system.
Borna built ClassSwap after running into full courses, waitlists and the familiar ritual of repeatedly checking enrollment portals. Students with compatible schedule problems were scattered across professor inboxes, group chats and informal campus posts.
"There should be one place where they can actually find each other," Borna said in the launch release.
That observation became ClassSwap's core product: each student lists a current enrollment and the course or section they want. ClassSwap says its Smart Match feature highlights compatible listings, while a Watchlist alerts users when a relevant listing appears. Students can then message one another inside ClassSwap and coordinate their next steps.
A matching engine for the add-drop scramble
ClassSwap initially names UCLA, Santa Monica College, USC and CSUN as its focus campuses. Concentrating on a handful of schools is central to Borna's bet because the product only becomes useful when enough students at the same institution are looking for overlapping changes at roughly the same time.
A seat-alert product can deliver value as soon as it can monitor a registrar's public course data. Peer matching carries a tougher cold-start problem. ClassSwap needs listings from students who want to enter courses and students preparing to leave them, with enough overlap in course numbers, sections and timing to produce useful connections.
The academic calendar compresses that opportunity into registration periods and the opening weeks of a term. A listing has little value after an add-drop deadline passes, and a potential match can disappear as soon as either student changes plans. Borna is building a campus network whose inventory expires quickly.
ClassSwap tries to give students other reasons to open the product. Its Class Insights feature carries student comments about courses and professors, while the Watchlist can notify users about new matching listings. Those features could keep students engaged before they need an immediate swap, helping Borna accumulate the participation that the matching engine requires.
ClassSwap stops short of touching enrollment records
ClassSwap does not transfer, reserve or guarantee a course seat. Its community guidelines prohibit buying or selling enrollment spots, exchanging credentials and attempting to bypass a university's registration rules. Students must complete every schedule change through their institution.
That boundary reduces the technical burden of integrating with multiple university systems. It also leaves the final transaction outside ClassSwap, where another student can change their mind, a seat can be claimed by someone else or a registrar rule can block the intended switch.
Borna's product therefore supplies coordination rather than control. ClassSwap can show that two students have compatible interests and give them a place to communicate. The registrar still decides what is possible.
ClassSwap is also explicit about its institutional status. A non-affiliation statement says no college or university has approved, endorsed or reviewed the service. School names appear to help users find classmates from the same campus.
At the same time, ClassSwap is seeking campus distribution. Its institutional pitch asks colleges to mention the service during orientation and advising, offers anonymized information about swap patterns and class demand, and describes the product as free for students and institutions. That page is a sales strategy: official distribution would help Borna solve the campus-density problem without buying every student signup one at a time.
The alternatives watch seats or build longer swap chains
Students already have tools for adjacent pieces of the registration problem. Coursicle says its planning and course-management app serves over 2 million students. SeatWatch says it monitors registration data at 881 universities and alerts students when a seat opens. Those products focus on detecting availability.
SwapMyClass is closer to Borna's peer-matching approach. It says its system can identify direct exchanges and chains involving three or more students when the available listing data supports them. ClassSwap's disclosed model centers on compatible listings, messaging and campus-specific course information.
The distinction gives Borna room to build a broader student coordination product, though it also makes moderation and trust part of the job. According to ClassSwap's privacy policy, users register with school-issued email addresses, while public listings show only a first name and last initial until both sides accept a connection. ClassSwap stores in-app messages and says automated and human systems may monitor them for safety and policy enforcement.
Those controls matter for a service that can move conversations between strangers toward an in-person campus interaction. They also raise the operating demands on a product founded by a student still finishing his own coursework. Matching is only one part of the system Borna has chosen to run; identity, moderation, privacy and institution-specific rules arrive with it.
ClassSwap's launch is grounded in a problem Borna encountered personally, and its design reflects the workaround students already use: find the person whose schedule change can help yours. His larger challenge is turning that one-to-one exchange into a reliable network across each campus. Four schools give Borna a manageable starting point. The usefulness of ClassSwap will be determined school by school, course by course and deadline by deadline.
