RuntimeWire Map Fixer restores “Gulf of Mexico” on Google Maps and in page text, with an experimental Apple Maps mode you can choose to enable. Version 2.3.0 is available as a free manual install while its Chrome Web Store listing is under review.

What Map Fixer changes

  • Google Maps — forces the Mexico region so the map paints “Gulf of Mexico” in English.
  • Text everywhere — performs literal “Gulf of America” → “Gulf of Mexico” and “Lake America” → “Lake Ontario” phrase replacements in page text across sites.
  • Apple Maps beta — experimentally swaps the map-tile region. It ships off by default because labels may load slowly or fail to appear.

Install manually while Chrome reviews it

  1. Download the Map Fixer ZIP archive.
  2. Extract the downloaded archive.
  3. Open chrome://extensions in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, or another Chromium browser and enable Developer mode.
  4. Choose Load unpacked, then select the extracted runtimewire-map-fixer folder that directly contains manifest.json.
  5. Reload any Google Maps or Apple Maps tabs that were already open.

Permissions and side effects

Map Fixer uses Manifest V3 declarative network rules and local extension storage. Its “Text everywhere” content script has broad page access so it can perform literal phrase replacements in page text across sites.

Google mode forces the Mexico region. That can change place ranking, distance units, or region-locked results. Apple support is experimental, can slow or suppress labels, and is off by default.
